Xiaomi Mi Box S - Videos freezing during playback
#1
Greetings from Brazil

I am facing a pretty annoying problem: on my Mi Box S most of the videos (almost 90% of them) keep stop playing and a message saying "Slow connection to play/stream" shows up error every other minute or so! I can't even use it anymore. The problem does not happen on my Smartphone, my Shield TV nor Amazon Fire Stick 4K.

I have several devices running Kodi
Smartphone OnePlus 7 PRO with Android 10 and Kodi 18.5
Shield TV 2017 with Android 9 and Kodi 18.5
Amazon Fire Stick 4K with Kodi 18.5
Mi Box S with Android 9 (installed via OTA yesterday) and Kodi 18.5 as well

All devices are connected to the same Asus ROG Rapture Router. The smartphone, the Mi Box S and the Amazon Fire Stick 4K are connect wirelessly AC 5 GHz whereas the Shield TV is connect via a ethernet cat7 cable to one of the ethernet ports in the router. The router is connected to the ISP ONT. Currently I've got 300mbps down 150mbps up connection to the internet. All my content is stored in GDrive and I am streaming it from there.

The tests have been done with the devices really closed to the router. I have confirmed on the router app that the devices were connected on the AC 5GHz network.

Here are the logs (I had to break down in 2 due to its size):

  https://paste.kodi.tv/ilokiguvic.kodi

I had the problem playing the following movies (media info for each one of them can be found on the following link):
  Maleficent: https://paste.kodi.tv/esugefexol
  Abominable: https://paste.kodi.tv/dilizuqugo
  Smurfs Lost Village: https://paste.kodi.tv/doweyixiwe
  Aeronauts: https://paste.kodi.tv/ixukojiqon
  Star Wars Last Jedi: https://paste.kodi.tv/afajitifus

I was able to play the following movies just fine:
  Joker: https://paste.kodi.tv/dumocudoso
  Apollo 13: https://paste.kodi.tv/nekexuxiga

I used to have the same problem in my NVidia Shield TV, fortunately it has been resolved on Kodi 18.4. Please find a log file that shows the results of playing the same movie on Shield TV without any problem: https://paste.kodi.tv/axuvogativ.kodi

What can I do to make the problem on Mi Box S go away?!

EDIT.: it also happen with the latest 18.6 version. Please find the new log here: https://paste.kodi.tv/wotosalopa.kodi

Thanks
Gilson

Let me add a new information: I've installed the Kodi 18.0 on the Mi Box S and the problem does not happen with that version. Any ideas? Thanks.

What do you guys think? Do you need more information to debug this?

We need more guys to debug this.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Ok. Please let me know if you need any further detail or run any procedure on my device to help solve the issue.

As said, there is currently one active developer of Android left. It needs time ...

I am pretty sure I have installed this one, its by far better than kodi 18.5 but I have problems yet, I can start the film, after 10-15 mins. I got the first buffer problem then each 2-3 mins or so...on ALL movies. I am just using a Smartv Sony and yeah I can play 4K content without problems (Netflix, Kodi addons...) just having problems with this google drive addon...

Did you something special or you are only using a vanilla instalation of Kodi?

My installation is pure Kodi + Google Drive. I have the backup addon, a language pack (PT-BR) and all the dependencies they install. I've detailed the movies I have tested and I don't think any of them are REMUXES. I think all of them are x265 HVEC.

I don't think the problem is the Kodi Plugin. As I mention, I used to have the same problem with NVIDIA Shield on Kodi 18.1 that got resolved on 18.4. There was not any update on the Google Drive Add-on during that time which makes me believe that the problem got fixed with a new Kodi release.

I hope the situation is the same with Mi Box S. Lets see what the devs say

Post number #1 of this thread is a demanding user setup...

Problem #1 - high bitrate movies played over any form of WiFi = expect problems with reliability when streaming.

Honestly we do not care how good your WiFi setup is. WiFi is simply not 100% reliable vs Ethernet.

Then introduce an additional Addon into the mix and you are asking for further trouble.

High bitrate anything needs Gigabit LAN if you want reliability.
And for the Mi Boxes that means using a USB3 > Gigabit LAN [1000M] adapter like the well know Ugreen ones.

Even then I would not use Android anything for demanding Kodi.

Your comment makes sense, but not in this context and I will tell you why:
  • when I had the same problem with Shield I was using (as I am today) a Gigabit cat7 cable connected to a Gigabit router.
  • I don't face the issue on any of my other wifi devices having the same software, version and level, connected to the same network to the same distance of the router, using the same content source and content
  • It works flawless when I change just one thing: the Kodi version from 18.5 to 18.0

The reality of the matter is the Mi Boxes WiFi is not the best at all.

The Fire TV Stick 4K the best, using AC MIMO WiFi (multiple antennas)

Mi Box has only been designed for low bitrate 4K Netflix, YouTube etc using its inbuilt WiFi.

Start getting too demanding using 30GB+ high bitrate stuff on a Mi Box using WiFi and the wheels will soon fall off.
