I only use Kodi for watching video files (got Android TV for everything else) and don't need any of the extended features.
Instead of installing a custom skin, I have removed everything except Favorites from the main menu, and then added the video folders I needed to Favorites. Then I customized the thumbnail for each folder, and here is the result. It's clean and very fast. This is basically everything I needed for Kodi.
