Linux is anyone using kodi with Samsung - Series 7 50" RU7100 4K UHD TV - UA50RU7100WXXY?

Just want to know how compatible this tv is.
Any problems etc.
My friend is having a lot of trouble getting ubuntu to work with an LG and would like to know if this one works before buying

Thanks

As the TV is only the "monitor" there should be no problem with the device which is attached on that TV as it's simply an HDMI connection. So every TV should be capable of displaying what one connects to it. Maybe your friend should take a look at the resolution he tries to use with the device he connects to that TV

This sounds more like an OS / OS-setting problem, rather than a TV or a Kodi problem

Thanks DaVu.

He has not been able to get ubuntu to display on the new LG see: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?...st13934405
If someone has used ubuntu/lkodi on that tv it would be great, he would not have to buy another new tv.

Once bitten, he would like to confirm it works prior to purchase this time.

nuc:NUC6i7KYK
Intel BOXNUC6I7KYK4 NUC Barebone Kit - Core i7 6th Gen IRIS Pro Graphics

he should look at the tv inputs pc
my Samsung Q7 Series (55) has a setting to pick device type

This tv seems to insist that you choose between certain devices, none of which work
to brake it down is there any pc display

try windows 10 unactivated

look at a android box instead of replacing tv

It's most likely a resolution/refresh rate issue.  Plug whatever is running Ubuntu into a monitor and drop the resolution and/or refresh rate down and then plug it into the TV until you find a combination that works.  Personally though, if my TV couldn't display 1080p/50 or 1080p/60 over hdmi then it would be going back.

If your 'friend' is looking to buy something new and is unclear on how to set up his current TV to work, I'd suggest he takes his Ubuntu box with him to a shop and asks them to demonstrate it running on his TV of choice.

My friends name is Chris. He is actually my wife's brother. He lives a fair way away so we don't visit very often. Mostly use teamviewer to fix his problems.
His previous samsung (1080) worked fine with this setup, but was quite old, so he wanted to upgrade to a 4k oled.
He chose LG.

As there is no post bios display when booting a usb ubuntu, I discounted a kodi issue and logged the above ubuntu forum entry for him as windows also boots from this unit to the LG without issue.
I have thought about taking my i3 kodi box over next time, but it also runs ubuntu (which is why I used it when creating his).

I would love to hear from anyone who runs ubuntu/kodi on either of these tv's so we can check the settings used.

Again. It's not a problem of the TV. It's a problem that the device which is connected to it tries to use a resolution/refreshrate the TV is probably not capable of. Hence you don't get a screen. Try to switch resolutions or refreshrates using the OS settings. Tell him to play aroung with the dual-monitor-settings (in meaning to try to expand or duplicate the screen).

As he is using Ubuntu, tell him to connect the PC to the TV and let him run xrandr and look at the output. It should tell you something about the connected TV.

Isn't he able to register at this forums on his own. Giving someone an advise who is giving that advise to someone else is a bit annoying as there might be differences of what you understand and what you might tell him and what he understands then. Giving support in that way mostly doesn't help anyone and, and don't get me wrong, is mostly a waste of time.

Given that information, this is what I would do.

1)  Connect NUC to TV and boot Windows.  Once booted and picture is on TV, check the display settings for resolution and refresh rate. Shutdown NUC.
2) Connect NUC to a pc monitor (borrow one or take NUC to a friend if necessary).  Boot Ubuntu on monitor.  Adjust display settings to match the ones we obtained above. Shutdown NUC.
3) Connect NUC back into TV and boot Ubuntu to test.

Based on the outcome of the test decide on whether or not to ;

A) Keep Ubuntu + TV
B) Keep Windows + TV
C) Keep NUC + change TV
D) Replace NUC + keep TV

If the TV is HDR capable, I'd go (much as it pains me to say it) for option B, given that there are two HDR capable forks of Kodi for Windows but none, AFAIK for Linux yet.  Otherwise, if I was perfectly happy with the picture quality of the TV when connecting other things to it (games console, blu-ray player etc etc) then I'd probably go for option D and use the NUC for something else.

What you might want to consider doing, as you say there is no display after the bios page(s), is look at the contents of /etc/default/grub.  If you can't see the grub menu then it's probably in a resolution that the TV doesn't like.  You could try changing GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in that file to something more suitable for the TV, say 1920x1080 and see if that makes a difference.

My last update did not appear to go though.

We got it to display following black_eagle's idea.

did:
export DISPLAY=:0
xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 1920x1080  --rate 60

It wont let us change to 4k (goes blank then back to 1080) but at least its working.

Which Denon receiver model is it? Have you tried with the computer directly connected to the TV instead?
