Kodi HDR Kodi Matrix 19.0 HDR Windows API crashing on trying to play MKV file
#1
Any of my very high def movies show horrible light/dark contrast so much so that I have to keep adjusting the brightness to watch an HD film, and some are just washed over in a color.  Someone recommended I down the HDR version of Kodi in order to fix this problem but I can't get any luck in running it for the files I need. Once I try to start the video, it just crashes.  The log is not helpful for me so I hope someone else can see an issue.

Please see my log here.  I start Kodi, go down to Videos, scroll down the video I want, hit play, screen flickers and Kodi HDR crashes.  The video is an MKV file that I am trying to play, but it's a general problem I have as I mentioned with all HD.
dacititiyu.kodi (paste)

As an aside, it surprises me that I can't just use the regular version of KODI to play HDR videos - why a special version when 4k is so popular?  Why can't the Microsoft Store version just play 4k right out of the box?

Many thanks for the help you all provide in general and for whatever you can do for this question as well!

Hi, maybe can help you set some Kodi settings same as recommended here in the first post:

https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=349861

Take into account that this HDR version of Kodi is based in pre-alpha of Kodi 19.0 and currently more changes has been introduced in recent nightly builds (probably current state is more inestable that few weeks ago).

Even so I have not experienced problems it seems that there are other users who experience crashes.

If tune settings not fix the problem you can also try old build:

v3.0.0 => https://github.com/thexai/xbmc/releases/tag/3.0.0  (first version with auto HDR switch)
v2.2.2 => https://github.com/thexai/xbmc/releases/tag/2.2.2  (last version with manual HDR switch in power config menu)

Thank you jogal - moving the 3.0.0 fixed the issue and all the 4K movies appear to play well now, even one that is 66 GB.  Count me in as another person seeing crashes in the latest version and 3.0.0 to be stable at least for me.

However, in THIS version of Kodi, some of the non-4k movies look bad colorwise now.  I still have the regular version of Kodi.  Should I only use this version to play HD and switch to the other for non-4k?  Or is there something I can do to make this my only instance of Kodi for now?

Non HDR movies should look the same as normal Kodi version.

If there is any difference it should be due to the change between 18.6 - 19.0 but it doesn't make much sense either.

Check also TV presets: sometimes TV can store diferentes presets (color, contrast, etc.) for HDR and non HDR signals on same HDMI input.

By the way there is a new Kodi HDR version that may solve the crashes.
