It seems the CCWGTV hardware is perfectly capable of doing the HDR->SDR realtime tonemapping conversion...

Would this one be worth filing on the Kodi bug tracker?

The same problem happens in VLC too so I'm guessing it is unfortunately some kind of bug in Google's video API that needs fixing by them. :/

I don't think it is a Kodi issue nor Android. I have the same behavior on my Android TV box (Broadcom SoC). Basically, there is no HDR->SDR tonemapping implemented. In any case, this is typically something done at SoC level and not directly an Android TV feature just like upscaling.

I believe casting from VLC works because the device casting is the one doing the tone mapping.

Do you mean VLC on my Android phone is pulling the file from the network drive, tonemapping it and then sending it via cast to the CCwGTV?

What is de best closing command for Kodi on my CCWGTV? I'm now using "quit" but it is taking ages. Is it at all necessary to close Kodi on my CCWGTV or is just pressing the home button on my remote OK too?

And what about the CCWGTV itself? Do you leave it on? Use the powerbutton on its remote? Just pull the wallplug?

I never had a chromecast before, so I really don't know what is best practice.

I just use the power button on the remote as it shuts off my TV and amp as well.  Never worry about shutting Kodi as such.
KODI Nexus - CoreELEC everywhere on Ugoos AM6 Plus&Pro, Plex Server, HDHomerun with TVHeadend on my NAS.

I just hit the Home button on the remote and then the Power button which turns off my TV and AVR via HDMI-CEC.

@jeffski10 @sirmedia I don't use cec.
And i use my ccwgtv for other apps like Netflix too
So if i want to switch between for instance Kodi and Netflix or Disney I can push the home button, app button or first close Kodi, etc

I have a really huge library of movies and tv, I think it might fill up the chromecast storage.
Can I mount external storage with a USB dock and tell Kodi to store thumbnails and metadata on the USB stick?
(Let's assume it's a good quality, reliable, fast USB stick in a good quality dock?)

I moved the Thumbnails folder to a network share. It worked fine. One path substitution in advancedsettings.xml, and it was good to go.

Can you do it locally? I'd prefer the performance of a local USB disk.
I would imagine SSH in is no longer viable anymore either?

I don't see why not. No idea about SSH. I use adb to administer Android devices.

My Chromecast with Google TV is doing strange things, so I did a factory reset and only installed Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Kodi
In Kodi, I only installed another scraper (Universal Movie Scraper) everything else in Kodi is standard

  1. in the Chromecasst settings, it thinks my tv is only 1080p 60 Hz, while it is a 4k & Dolby Vision capable LG OLED C7 in fact. The option to change this is greyed out. Thus Kodi thinks I have a 1080p tv too. Why? I have it connected like this: original powerbrick → Aukey USB C Hub with ethernet → Chromecast → Marantz SR7011 (also 4k & Dolby Vision capable) → LC OLED C7. If I change my setup and connect the Chromecast directly to my tv, the Chromecast thinks it is a 4k tv, but Kodi still thinks it is a 1080p tv. Why? I changed it again (not turning of Kodi, the Chromecast, tv and receiver, just unplugged it form my tv and plugged it in my receiver again, while everything was still one, and now my Chromecast thinks it is a 4k tv. Kodi still thinks it is only 1080p
  2.  if I choose "auto match content" everything looks washed out. But with a HDR tv, you should choose to auto match content, am I correct?
  3. in Kodi I cannot play some of my movies, because A. They stutter like hell, or B. don't start at all. Strange thing is, when I use VLC on this Chromecast, it is working flawlessly
  4. I don't know what audio settings to chose in Kodi. As it is connected via HDMI I should chose passthrough, as far as I know. Doesn't it matter how many channels I select? It says it has no influence on passthrough, but the passthrough options changed when setting audio channels (enable DD AC3 transcoding option is there when I select 2.0, but not there when I select 5.1 or 7.1 for example)
Anyone that can help me solve this?

Looks like the new Google TV update from this week has some nice new HDR settings which will hopefully sort out the MediaCodec tone mapping problem to non-HDR TVs!

Interesting tip to use SDR on LCD TVs. I have an average quality LCD, I should compare SDR vs HDR on it and not assume that HDR is better just because the TV supports it.

Hmm... I updated and now the only option on my non-HDR tv is SDR. Kodi still stutters on HDR stuff though. Suggestions?

Yeah it sadly doesn't look like Google fixed that problem, even though from my research, the particular Amlogic chipset supports hardware tonemapping in the kernel and the option just needs to be exposed in the settings... Not sure why they don't do that 🥴

Anyone?

How do I setup my CCGTV + Kodi so that it understands that I have a 4k Dolby Vision capable TV and a 4k Dolby Vision, HD Audio capable AV-receiver?
And why CCGTV +Kodi can't play some movies that CCGTV + VLC has no problem with?
