v18 Unable to get artist images to work
#1
Hi,

I've been struggling to get the artist images to work, album images are not a problem (my files are FLAC and have the album images embedded). I have tried to follow the instructions on the wiki (Starting at https://kodi.wiki/view/Music_artwork#Man...dd_Artwork ). I have done an export of my library to get the folder structure/NFO files needed, and I have added that exported folder as the Artist information folder. When testing I added a few image files into the artist folder within the AIF (folder.jpg, logo.gif). I have also added a <thumb> tag in the artist.nfo file pointing out a local artist image.

A restart with a clean/update was performed and I can see no images. What am I missing/doing wrong?

Example artist.nfo file:
Quote:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
<artist>
    <name>...and Oceans</name>
    <musicBrainzArtistID>284460fc-c58a-4214-b81c-299a66bbd786</musicBrainzArtistID>
    <sortname>...and Oceans feat. Blastmor</sortname>
    <type></type>
    <gender></gender>
    <disambiguation></disambiguation>
    <born></born>
    <formed></formed>
    <biography></biography>
    <died></died>
    <disbanded></disbanded>
    <path>smb://USERNAME:PASSWORD@XXX/Music/FLAC/beets/_ArtistInfo/...and Oceans</path>
    <thumb aspect="clearlogo" preview="smb://USERNAME:PASSWORD@XXX/Music/FLAC/beets/_ArtistInfo/...and Oceans/folder.png">smb://guest:guest@XXX/Music/FLAC/beets/_ArtistInfo/...and Oceans/folder.png</thumb>
    <album>
        <title></title>
        <year></year>
    </album>
</artist>
(Yes, it finds the folder even though its starts with a ., I have enabled that config)

I am running Kodi 18.9 (18.9.0) Git:leia_pi4_18.9-Leia on a RaspberryPi4 running LibreELEC 9.2.6

The easiest way to get artist images to work is use a skin that supports this function.   If your main focus is on music playback, I will recommend you use Aeon MQ8 + Multi MOD.

The author, @latts9923  of Multi MOD is still actively supporting this mod.  He has been very helpful and wonderful.

All skins support displaying artist artwork.

Maybe, but some require less effort to display artist artwork.
For example, Estuary, the default skin for Leia, does not display artist artwork after installation of Leia.  Maybe it does, but I have not figured out how to set it up.  So, it is easier to just use a skin that supports artist artwork without some lengthy setup process.

Estuary will display Artist artwork with no bother at all as long as you've done a Query All Artists to set off the scraping process.

Make sure default scraper is set, see https://kodi.wiki/view/Settings/Media/Mu...nformation , then it's simply Query info for all artists from the Context menu on any Artist within the Artist node see https://kodi.wiki/view/Scraping_Music

In your log you have the following...

xml:

DEBUG: DoScan Skipping dir 'smb://XXX/Music/FLAC/beets/_ArtistInfo/51/' due to no change
DEBUG: DoScan Skipping dir 'smb://XXX/Music/FLAC/beets/_ArtistInfo/52/' due to no change
DEBUG: DoScan Skipping dir 'smb://XXX/Music/FLAC/beets/_ArtistInfo/53/' due to no change
DEBUG: DoScan Skipping dir 'smb://XXX/Music/FLAC/beets/_ArtistInfo/54/' due to no change
DEBUG: DoScan Skipping dir 'smb://XXX/Music/FLAC/beets/_ArtistInfo/55/' due to no change

Is this your Artist Information folder that holds artwork for your Artists? If yes, then Kodi has no idea who artist 51 is. It needs to be the name of the Artist, not a number. And the name needs to be an exact match to the Artist name in the Kodi library.

That is the artist name. The scanned folder names has been obfuscated as I do not wish to share my entire library publicly.

Is there a wiki page that explains how to get the artist image to work when using image files locally? Do I need to put a link in an NFO file for it? Is there a specific file name that Kodi wants to use when displaying the artist image? (Are there restrictions on the image type?)

I gave you the link in my post.

I have tried to follow the instructions there but I have not been able to get any artist images to work. Do you know if the screenshots provided here: https://kodi.wiki/view/Update_Music_Libr...esh_Artist are up to date? Here are examples from my machine:

Image

And once I select the artist:
Image

Artist information, such as what is shown in image1 in the wiki link above is not shown, also, image2 in the wiki link shows information/images as well as buttons to show fanart/refresh/choose art, those buttons are nowhere to be seen on my system. Could you point me to a wiki page that explains how to set this up please?

Also, is there a wiki page that answers my other questions, or could you do so please?
  • Do I need to put a link in an NFO file for the artist image when using image files locally?
  • Is there a specific file name that Kodi wants to use when displaying the artist image?
  • Are there restrictions on the image type?

Regards,

No.
If the images are correctly named, and placed in the correct location, Kodi will find them.

It is hard to help you when you modify your log to hide your albums (why?) which is exactly what we need to see to know where you are going wrong.

So the best I can do at this stage is make you run an Export using the Artist folders only method shown here... https://kodi.wiki/view/Import-export_lib...lders_only which will create artist folders for you.
Have you set the Artist Information Folder in your Kodi settings?
Let us know how it works out for you.

Thank you. I do have a case where it was named folder.jpg but still did not show up. However, now that I can reach the information page I will be adding the artwork manually.

It might be worth adding that the filename needs to be folder.jpg and that only jpg files are accepted. (It's possible that this is stated somewhere but that I overlooked it, in that case, perhaps highlighting it more would be prudent).

Like I have mentioned, not only in this thread but in others, I do not want to publicly post my entire library. I have seen others express the same. To be quite honest, I think it is not far fetched to argue that it _could_ be considered personally identifiable information.

All the Artwork types are detailed here... https://kodi.wiki/view/Artwork_types

Sure, understand but I want you to be aware that editing your log to that extent reduces the chance we can spot the problem.
If you want to keep it private, then PM the full log to the Team Member that is currently assisting you then nobody else can see it.
