Android TV box with Broadcom BCM7271 SoC
#1
Hello,

Now that Kodi 19 is out there, I have managed to reach an acceptable Kodi experience on my 4K box after playing a little bit with settings. This is quite cool as I never managed to do the same with Kodi 18 - good stuff!

The box is the one given by my TV provider so I'm just trying to get the most out of it. Also, I haven't seen much info on this SoC so I thought my experience may help others.

As many Android TV devices, I do have some limitations:
- No lossless audio - hardly a surprise!
- No multichannel PCM output - only AC3, EAC3 and DTS in 5.1
- No DTS-HD HR passthrough - if I activate this I do experience severe stutter and video/audio out of sync, DTS passthrough works well though
- HQ scaler increase the default 20% to 60% as it caused some stutter on 1080p material
- No HDR to SDR tonemapping - not great since I do have a 4K SDR TV
- the box has gigabit ethernet "on paper" but not in practice - 5 GHz Wifi works fine
- Amazon Prime app not available in Google Play

Hope this helps.

I investigated a little bit more the DTS-HD issue.

It seems to be related to Kodi which for some reason doesn't passthrough more than 5.1 DTS on this device. I managed to get 7.1 DTS-HD passthrough with VLC.
