My TV indicates that its displaying 1080p when kodi is running whether I'm watching something from a 1080p or 4k source.

The TV displays 4k through the fire tv on Netflix, YouTube etc but just draws a blank with kodi. The whitelist only had the option of 1080p. I'm running the latest version of kodi.

Has anyone ever had the fire tv gen 2 running 4k through kodi or am I wasting my time?

It has been a while since I tried running 4K on my Gen 2 Fire TV. I know that most of my 4K stuff is HDR and I had to buy a Gen 3 to have HDR compatibility. I feel like I actually got 4K working on my Gen 2 but the HDR limitation killed it for me.

I have since bought a 2nd Gen Fire TV Cube and I’m pretty happy with it.
