Many people have old devices, not powerful for today date, used as Kodi hardware. They do not support modern codecs as AV1, HEVC and 4K resolutions as well. Replacing this devices with new ones at regular basis generate whole mountain of electronic junk every year. One thing can be made for using this devices much longer, if they are working and are not damaged:
You can make a new one binary addon for Kodi. Lets call it "CloudTranscode". After installing it, the user must configure it for specific streaming service. The user choose some Netflix movie or local video to play via Kodi. Then CloudTranscode addon will redirect the stream (before all local computing, filtering and etc.) via internet toward choosed streaming service. For example Twitch or nVidia. CloudTranscode addon will get back the transcoded (in the cloud) stream and give it to the Kodi Player for easy playing in all this old hardware devices.
- The CloudTranscode addon will have settings which codecs and resolutions will send to the cloud and back. Only very heavy ones, that are unable to direct play locally will be transcoded in the cloud.
- Because of playing live feed (from the cloud), seeking will be problematic if the upload speed is lower AND time for uploading is higher than download speed AND time for downloading the whole video.
- No need to separate Kodi on server and client (as with Plex): only one local device is used, which does not have to be new and must not supports all new technologies.
- With this addon will be possible to stream retro game, played in Kodi via choosed streaming service without additional software.
- This will eliminate the need to constantly purchase video cards and other devices.
