Does Kodi Support HDR 10+ and/or Dolby Vision?
#1
Hi,

I'm new to the community of Kodi, and I did try searching for another post like this one, but it didn't show anything about HDR 10+ content.  I have an Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) and mkv files that have Dolby Vision as well as HDR 10+.  I'm wondering if Kodi is able to read these files/movies without it washing out the colors and such.  I saw somewhere that tone mapping was recently included in the Nexus update, but please correct me if I'm wrong.  If Kodi doesn't support one of the options (Dolby Vision / HDR 10+) will it fall back on to the other option it can read?

Please let me know, and thank you in advance for your time.

Kind Regards,
Ammon

Kodi supports HDR10+ but not on the Shield. I have seen it work in Kodi on my Philips 48OLED935 TV that runs Android TV.

The Shield Pro 2019 only supports regular HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

BUT: Dolby Vision in Kodi is only supported in MP4 containers in v19 and v20. For Dolby Vision in MKV containers you either need a special build (like Maven's KodiNerds build) or use a nightly of Kodi v21 Omega which has ffmpeg 5.x incorporated.

Regarding fall-back: that depends entirely on the media file you are playing. Some files have both HDR10(+) and DV embedded, other files have only DV (they will look purple and green if you play them on a TV without DV support).

What about mkv files that are HDR 10+?  Will Kodi be able to support those?  It's unfortunate because I have the worst of both worlds.  Nvidia Shield that does support DV, but only have mkv files. Looks like I'll look into purchasing an Apple TV here pretty soon.

Like I said already, Kodi can play HDR10+ files on devices that support it, such as my Philips TV with Android TV. The Nvidia Shield 2019 Pro simply does not support HDR10+ so it will fall back to regular HDR10.

HDR10+ works on several CoreELEC boxes, as well as Vero 4K+.
