Thanks for this!

Since my main point of interest went beyond aesthetics but was more into functionality, is it now possible to have a setting in Kodi that would allow to bitstream DD+ with Atmos and decode regular DD+ without Atmos?

Reason is Denon AVRs (but I guess Marantz's too) do not allow for different upmixing algorithms between DD+ and TrueHD. So if you select a different algorithm than Dolby Surround Upmixer for DD+ you end up with the same algorithm applied to DD+ AND DD+ with Atmos AND TrueHD with Atmos. Completely discarding the extra information in Atmos (Auro-3D working with just the 5.1 or 7.1 bed layer, that is).

From my absolutely zero experience in coding it seems to be a trivial addition. But maybe it's overly complicated because of reasons, so I don't want to sound arrogant in asking. Thanks!

Let me know if the right path for this would be to open an issue on Github. I hesitate because it's not an "issue" in the strictest sense of the term.

I’ve been bitstreaming Atmos (TrueHD and DDPlus JOC) from Kodi for years. Why do you need any change? My AVRs always detects Atmos and decode to 7.1.4 etc. When I play FLAC my AVR switches to multichannel PCM (and upmixes if I have upmixing on). I never have to change anything except the volume.

How would Kodi tell the AVR to switch to a specific upmix mode for each different AVR manuafacturer? Can that even be done? I think the devs have more important work than your request.

You are overcomplicating things. I am just asking to have DD+ with Atmos being different than regular DD+ in the bitstreaming settings.

Same thing as DD is different than DD+ and TrueHD in bitstreaming settings. As DTS and DTS-HD are different. They don't have to deal in any way with AVRs from different manufacturers. It's just a setting that would simplify things for people with certain brands of AVRs. I've explained why.

I absolutely want to bitstream True HD Atmos and DD+ JOC (Atmos for people that are not familiar with the terminology).
I would simply like to be able to decode regular DD+ to PCM while being able to bitstream DD+ with Atmos.

I hope it's clearer now.

While it would pehaps now be technically possible, we don't have anyone specifically looking after audio these days, so it something unlikely to happen without massive user demand, and I just don't see the demand for such a change. But you could try your luck by creating a new feature request going into detail why such a thing is needed for your use cases, however just be warned it's not something that is likely to gain any immediate traction, but it's also a case of "if you don't ask, you don't get".
