Default On for Subtitles
#1
You might believe that Kodi already has this. But not for embedded subtitles on British broadcast TV or TV recordings

I am partly hearing impaired. And I am a simple Kodi user. I use Kodi to watch TV and catch up with recorded programs. But I have to turn on subtitles every time I change channels, or change to a different recording, I also have to reset the subtitle setting when the soundtrack changes from 5.1 to stereo or stereo to 5.1. Channel Four always defaults to stereo for advert breaks, The setting 'apply this for all media' does not work for these embedded subtitles

I get the impression that the authors of the Kodi Wiki on subtitles are unaware of this as it is not mentioned

With the Estuary skin, to turn on subtitle each time I have to press OK, press left twice, Press Enable Subtitles, press Close, Press Back

The logic I am requesting is as follows:

IF user requested subtitle default on
AND audio soundtrack changed OR source changed
AND subtitles are off
AND user did not turn off subtitles
THEN turn on subtitle

Well that sounds easy......

Thanks in advance

Does enabling this setting make any difference... https://kodi.wiki/view/Settings/Player/S..._subtitles
Which PVR backend are you using?

Simply press "T" on a keyboard when movie is shown. You can also map a button on your remote control that switches through subtitles. Use the addon "keymap editor" for that.

That still requires extra user interaction after every channel and audio track change so it does not solve the issue for OP, but it does make it a bit quicker to enable the subtitles for sure.

I always have subtitle on live tv with Tvheadend and on most of my mkv’s

Try this:
Settings-Player-Language-preferred subtitle languange <- this has to match your subtitle

Prefer audio stream for the hearing impaired

My hub is VU+ UNO4KSE Satellite with Open Vix, My PVR settings use Enigma (Dreambox/VU+)

Why not try Tvheadend as backend? Can be installed on vu/enigma boxes

Thank you Jonke for your suggestion re TVHeadend.  I had a quick scan through some of the documentation and found that quite daunting.   A few years back I might well have relished getting stuck in but now at 85 I just have no appetite for what appears to be a challenge like that

I have previously used a wireless keyboard to press T to turn back on subtitles but in the end found it irritating to have that device always in arms reach

The subtitles are in the stream not anyway, not really based the backend.

When you go to Subtitle setting while playing a video you you use the option Set ad default for all media at the bottom of the dialog?

Tvheadend and Kodi has ”always” had subtitle working and that was not the case back in the day when i tried
With . Ts and Enigma / Kodi .
Tvheadend fix this in there htsp protocol.

Teletext was nerver good for me with just Kodi and . Ts streams . So for sure worth a try

Thank you SoulReaper.   That was quick.

I was also going to add that if I connect my hub (VU UNO 4K SE) direct to a TV via HDMI and press the subtitle button, I then get a choice of DVB or Teletext subtitles.   But when streamed to Kodi only teletext subtitles are available
