Bug Kodi crash with certain glitchy mkv videos on Fedora SilverBlue (bazzite) and Ubuntu
Since version 20 releases I have noticed that some of my MKV videos cause a complete crash out of Kodi. In prior releases, the videos that cause the crash would cause a kind of skip in the video and some visual garbage, usually green noise on the screen for a second or two but it would never cause a crash. I have isolated a video that causes the crash and run a test with a clean install / empty config with debug logging enabled. I think this is the root error: 7 error <general>: CVaapi2Texture::Map: vaSyncSurface - Error: the requested VAEntryPoint is not supported (13)

This is an AMD system with an R5 5600 and a 6700XT. I have recreated the crash on two AMD GPU based systems with two different distros. I apologize in advance if this is a well known problem. Smile

Kodi version: 20.2 (20.2.0) | 20230629-5f418d0-dirty
Install source: Fedora flatpak installed from repo
Distro: Fedora 38 kinoite (bazzite) https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite (note that this same crash is observed on this hardware with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and the Arch based holoISO)
I got around to reproducing this on my other AMD Linux system.  This time I'm using Ubuntu 23.04 and the log output is a bit different, but the same video produces a crash in Kodi at the same point.  This time I was able to get some debugging info via gdb (below).

OS: Ubuntu 23.04, Linux elvin 6.2.0-33-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue Sep  5 14:49:19 UTC 2023 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
System Info: Lenovo ThinkCentre M75n IoT
Kodi version: Kodi Media Center 20.2 (20.2.0) Git:20230630-5f418d0b13
Kodi install source: Ubuntu PPA https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/

Probably the same issue - https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/issues/23800
Yes, it appears to be.  The sample video from that issue causes the crash at 0:11 is promised.  Nod

  1. the noted error "the requested VAEntryPoint is not supported" only appears in the log from fedora on post #1
  2. the log is cut off on post #2 so ubuntu version is not evident (or i missed it) and other pertinent information may be missing
  3. the ubuntu ppa from team-kodi is not currently being maintained
  4. 20.2 stable is on ffmpeg 4.4.1, kodi alpha versions are 5.1.x
  5. the test video on the noted issue is HEVC (h265) the log of "badvideo.mkv" is AVC (h264)
  6. the test video on the noted issue does not crash on 21.0-ALPHA1 (20.90.101) Git:20230321-124023d6ff using intel va-api (intel iris) which is using FFmpeg version/source: 5.1.2-Kodi on Debian 11 - but the video does freeze at 11 seconds
  7. flatpak can be unstable in itself

there are simply too wide of range in variables to draw any conclusions

try -
  1. verify file with ffmpeg
  2. remux to video only using ffmpeg to eliminate audio
  3. test a current alpha nightly with newer ffmpeg core version
  4. provide an unredacted log
Thanks for replying.  I will focus now on just the Lenovo/Ubuntu system.  I managed to get 21.0-ALPHA1 (20.90.101) Git:20230413-53001491bc installed on this machine from the nightly PPA.  You did mention that the PPA's are no longer maintained and this is the latest version I could find to install.  Flathub Beta supplies a much older version.

For the 11 second video from the mentioned Github issue, vaapi-crash-hevc-4k.mkv, I do get a crash.

For my original badvideo.mkv, I get another crash.
