Best Kodi Media Player Options 2024
(2024-09-06, 03:57)hdmkv Wrote: @clarkss12, props to you for recommending the Ugoos UR02 remote (but, maybe not quite for the reason you may be using it Wink). I had ordered 2 for both my AM6B+ units & love them! They're lightweight, just the right size, with ample buttons/functions, and darn cheap!

So, first tried with the pair of config files needed to use in IR mode. Great... but, one major drawback (at least for me): remote needs a fairly direct line-of-sight (given IR mode) to the AM6B+. My A/V rack is off to the side & my projector is in front, so less than ideal.

Thought I'd try Bluetooth, and IMHO this works best. This functions like a Fire TV remote, but better. First paired w/my smart TV in my family room, which itself was already paired w/my soundbar. Then paired UR02 with AM6B+ under CoreELEC settings > Bluetooth. Like a Fire TV remote, the UR02 kept/carried over the volume up/down & mute functionality, but added several CE/Kodi functions. So, these buttons just worked right off the bat:
  • Volume up/down & mute working as I described above/below to control soundbar/AVR volume
  • Mouse toggle/pointer
  • D-pad
  • the 'x-back' (below the gray power) & 'arrow-back' (to left of home button) functioning as back/return
  • Hamburger button bringing up context menu
  • 'Home' taking me back to main Kodi menu/home

Remaining buttons didn't do anything or not quite what we'd expect. The two power buttons on the top turned off my TV, but not back on. The red power button also turned off AM6B+/CE & back on. However, using the Keymap Editor add-on, I was able to map the globe button (below the volume controls) to do a video library scan, and the search button next to it to bring up Global Search. Both handy.

The only buttons I haven't been able to map as of now are the gray up/down, bottom skip left/right (orange/blue) & the Music (green). And the center mic/voice button, which not working under CE isn't surprising.

I paired my other UR02 in my home theater set-up, and got it working to control everything as above, but this time, volume up/down & mute w/my AVR.

Overall, awesome for just for a $8 (approx.) remote!

Since you are now the Guru of remote controls (Kodi and CoreELEC), I need some assistance.  I have not been able to get the Dune HD R4 remote to "pair" with the Ugoos AM6B+.  However, I got the basic keys to function on my Dune Homatics box running CoreELEC.  I have tried different "remote configs" on the Ugoos AM6B+, but not working.

I don't use remote configs as they're IR only, and for me, I don't have a direct line of sight to devices. I use Bluetooth mostly, and pair remotes to devices that way. CoreELEC is quite good at accepting all kinds of BT remotes & pairing w/them. Sometimes you need to pair twice when presented w/"Pair" & "Trust & connect" options. Usually just "Pair" works.

I finally got the "Homatics-B21-local-keyboard.hwdb" file to work for the basic functions.  The center "Enter" button does not work, but the "mouse cursor" works.  I also, used the "key map editor" to program one of the colored buttons to function as a "Enter" key.  Who would be responsible to create a Bluetooth entry for this Dune HD R3 remote, Kodi or CE?

What do you guys think about the Homatics Box R 4K Plus for 92USD? Worth it?

Im actually trying to wait if s928 will get FEL, since s905x4 is apparently known to be somewhat slow (I know now that there's the 25% boost thing, although I'm not sure it's gonna work for s905x4 on the latest nightly or not)

I mean, booting to android for widevine L1 apps, and then CE for local playback with support for 4K DV HDR DTS X ATMOS TrueHD is a pretty good upgrade from my current Shield TV 2015 I think?
HT System - Denon X1500-H, 4x RP-500M for FR,FL,SR,SL, RP-404C for Center, 2x RP-500SA for Top Middle, SVS PB-2000. Harmony 665, LG OLED CX 65, Samsung PN51H5000 Plasma

Maybe. Shield is still (by today's standards) a powerful, fast device. Homatics Box R 4K Plus will pale in comparison, even if it can do Dolby Vision FEL now under CoreELEC. A S928X box w/FEL sounds promising, but I don't know of any that'll do 4K Netflix, Prime, D+, etc. if those are also important to you.

Shield TV for streaming and AM6B+ with CE on eMMC is the ultimate combo for me. Really can't think of anything else at this point.

how is this box with N100 16GB LPDDR5 RAM , 512GB m.2   @$113.18 (pre tax)

code CDGB2B

when the AMB6+ is dearer
man I wish the N100 could do all hd audio and video

isn't the s922x SOC's much cheaper for manufacturers than an n100? and you have 4 times the ram and 16 times the storage!

Apple TV 4K significantly out-performs the Shield TV for DRM streaming. I've got both, but the Stream TV sits in the drawer.  The Apple TV 4K handles dynamic frame rate switching in pretty much every app automatically (which is a must for any DRM player given the mix of 24 and 25fps content on Netflix, Prime etc.) and the UI is far cleaner.

I have an AM6B+ and a Pi5 running CE and LE respectively for Kodi.  The Pi5 copes better with some content than the AM6B+ (particularly high bitrate SDR HEVC 10-bit stuff with 5.1 FLAC audio that the AM6B+ chokes on)

that must be a software related than hardware right?

Do they both do software decoding, or does one have hardware decoder for such content?

@noggin, assume you have HS400 enabled on your AM6B+, and are using the latest nightly w/the DTB performance enhancements?

Both should be using hardware decoding - it's regular 10 bit HEVC (same as UHD BD but SDR HD not HDR UHD), albeit with FLAC 5.1 audio not DTS-HD or Dolby True HD.  I need to check that the AM6B+ is running gigabit not 100Mbs to rule that out - as they may well peak above 100Mbs Ethernet bit rates.

The other media I've had issues with is some DVD ISO and VIDEO_TS of DVDs that just crashed/froze CE on the AM6B+ and played fine in LE on the Pi 5 - I'm guessing that was using hardware on the AM6B+ and software on the Pi 5 (as the Pi doesn't do hardware decode of MPEG2)

Not yet - I'm still running from uSD card not eMMC - but that shouldn't impact video replay should it?

Unsure if it impacts video playback performance or just menus & library navigation.

is the SK1 as powerful or more powerful than the 2019 shield?
