I have an old asus a8n sli MB with a 3200+ athlon chip in it and 4G of ram.
not dual core of course.

any suggestions on a cheap video card that would allow this box to playback
HD?
i think this one would do the job. dx10.1 compatible and all.

i guess i am less than informed about what load the processor would need to handle vs. what could be offloaded to the video card.

i have a HTPC now running XP MCE. looking at running XBMC on it and a new build - ie. the reason for the post - that would be portable to move from my master bedroom to my outdoor tv area on a season basis.

Unfortunately XBMC doesn't use the graphics card for HD video, so the video card won't make much difference as long as it supports OpenGL 2.0 (or 1.4 bare minimum) you're set.

With a 3200+ Athlon chip you should be fine with almost all 720p stuff, but forgot 1080p.

Wow, I guess I need to look into that.
What does it do? Is there any advantage to a decent video card or is it simply a function of your CPU and RAM?
