not sure of the coding required but if the remote could be made to work with xmbc you have the instant killer app for the box.

a: yes, xbmc currently supports both xbox™ dvd remotes and game controllers/gamepads.
though we highly recommend getting a xbox™ dvd remote (as this may be needed later).
