VDPAU API for Linux released by NVIDIA today - GPU hardware accelerated video decoder
on http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=33327 , several PPA could be used :

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
or
SVN PPA (daily builds)
...

which version is recommandized for vdpau compilation (i try to found information is REAME etc...) but i find nothing !

nunu
nunu, that versions (the ones in the ppa) are already compiled, so no way to use vdpau with them... the right way to have xbmc-vdpau is this (and, if you have got NO other installation of xbmc you don't want to break, maybe add a sudo make install before ./xbmc.bin)

of course don't forget to sudo apt-get install all the required packages you can see in README.linux
Just thought I dump in my little tests with the branch

AMD Athlon 3gig (single core) with 1gig ram and 8600gt vdpau branch of course
(Used to struggle to play 720p)
To all testing this, there seems to be some issue with pulseaudio, so need to kill it and use alsa

pulseaudio -k

I've seemed to have success with PA and the vdpau branch.

I have a multi-seat X setup, one X server is using onboard 8200 w/DVI to LCD panel, and the other X server is using an EN8400GS card with TV-out to my lower end LCD tv in the bedroom.

Successfully played 720 and 1080 simultaneously (sometimes getting up to 60% CPU utilisation on an X2 4200+.) I am using a single soundcard (on motherboard) with PA running 2 sinks. The front stereo jack goes to the bedroom speakers, and the 'surround' jack is used in the office for the 2nd X server.

So far so good, I really appreciate all the work being done on this branch - I was not looking forward to having to shell out for a 3GHz cpu for HD in the bedroom. Thanks to everyone! I look forward to tracking this.

If you need any help testing, or need perf stats, etc etc, I'm happy to help where I can.

Cheers
I haven't looked at the code or tested yet, but I'm just wondering -- will the other skins work with this OOB or will they have to be adapted somehow?

BTW, thank you so much for working on this, motd2k! Cool
I dont see why they wouldnt just work as they are.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure.
I'm a little confused, I understand it isn't currently implemented but is VC1 support even potentially possible? or is it not exposed to VDPAU?

(I ask because the majority of my HD content is VC1)
Your lucky day. VC-1 is implemented and working. motd2k is a madman...

On supporting cards... g98+
arg!
i have a 9500GT (G96).
i must change it to have fully VC-1 implemented !

update :
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_43029.html
we can see the boards that support purevideo HD acceleration. For VC1 we see that all desktop Geforce 9 series support VC-1 ?!
And on one side only G98 support VC1 HW acceleration. The 9500 GT has a G96 ?!

I'am a bit lost.
Get a cheap 8400 with PCI-e 2.0 - this is a G98...

on this model there is no HDMI connector.
I will try to find one.
Thanks !

update : i try to find in France such board. All , on main web site, are with PCI Express 1 ...

Must maybe wait a bit for disponibility or wait for ion platform. I will try to mesure my platform consumption.

Exactly. People looking to buy a new card for this, check the running list here http://dvbn.happysat.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=50112

One important thing on the (asus) nvidia cards is the "GS" or "GT"... I have an Asus EN8400GS Silent 512MB (roughly $50 at newegg..) and it has full cababilities. From what I understand, GS cards are doing VC1
