I think the FFmpeg devs are waiting for a nvidia implementation that
-falls back to software if the hardware doesn't support it
-can disable vdpau at compile time
-is according to the FFmpeg C standards (they are rather picky)
It seems that they are not so keen on depending on closed source projects.
And once the ffmpeg svn is updated, xbmc still has to be updated (OSD, ...), which will also take a lot of time (however in case of Mythtv, that went fast).
One day we can build low power, low noise xbmc boxes that can handle 1080p clips. I hope that day is not so far away.
