Is it possible to turn on the PC by MS MCE Remote?
#1
I tried to look around on the web, but unfortunatelly I haven't found the answer. I would like to turn on my dedicated HTPC via MS MCE Remote form S5.

Is that possible?

(anyway, I was even not able to turn on the PC with USB keyboard under ubuntu)

Before you ask, I read this topic, which was promising, but haven't succeded.... Huh

There is "a" way to do it..

Though both may require some DIY ability.

(yes i know the instructions are for an XBOX but remember the XBOX was a glorified PC)

You're on the right path. It depends on several factors. The motherboard, the OS, and anything in between.

The motherboard has to support waking up from a USB device. For example a Key press.

The OS has to be properly configured to support this feature also. Most of the time when the OS is shutdown for a suspend or hibernate, these features are generally not turned on. This could be one explanation as to why the computer didn't turn back on when a key press event occurred.

The remote, and receiver would also have to work in conjunction with the motherboard and OS to turn on the system out of a sleep state. If you press a button on the remote that doesn't mean that a key press will be received on the USB Bus in order to turn the unit on.

There are a lot of variables involved.

I think a DIY project would be a heck of a lot more fun than playing with config files. In order to turn on an ATX standard machine all that is needed is to complete a circuit for a short time.

You should have a IR receiver which is turned on even if the system is off. Preferably powered directly by the PSU.

If you have for example this IR device from OrigenAE it will work:

These are included in their HTPC-chassis, for example this one:

The Zalman HD-135 case has a hard power on and off as well from the remote. It is the Mplay Blast by VLSystems. Which can be purchased as a 5.25" insert as a standalone unit it also offer fan control for two devices.

There are a few in Sweden but to find in your particular country it's probably best to contact them. Maybe do a google-search for 'origenae +site:<insert your country code here>'

Thanks for the feedback guys.

This IR 110 receiver looks quite good indeed. But in this case, we need to purchase a complete new set, and it's also questionable how to get it in Europe.

My preference would be:
- Do it without any additional hardware, just config. (In my case, the receiver gets power for sure, as it is blinking, when any button pushed, so there should be some trick to wake the PC)
- If it is not possible, then a DIY hack for the default MCE Remote would be great. (to connect it "somehow" to the power header of the MB for example)
