VortexBox - open source NAS media server with Auto CD/DVD Ripper & BitTorrent Client
#31
Uhm, that's a bummer. I have many drives flying around here, though only one working PC I could use for that.
Is it planned to implement this feature in future releases? This would be great and would really set VortexBox apart from other setups.

It only takes 4 to 6 min to RIP a CD so you can burn through them fairly fast. Ripping is completely automated. Just pop them in while your watching TV. Smile

A lot of you are already using VortexBox as a back-end server for xbmc. I just wanted to tell everybody that we finally got 1.0 out the door. For those of you who don't know VortexBox is an open source Linux distro that turns a computer into a NAS/Auto CD ripping jukebox.

These are the new features.
* FLAC to Apple Lossless (m4a) mirroring through the web GUI
* MusicBrainz and CDDB used for ID3 tags
* Tool tips for each section in the GUI
* Logitech SqueezeCenter 7.4.1 pre installed and configured
* Software upgrade through the web GUI

We are now starting work on the next version of VortexBox. If anybody has feature requests feel free to post them here. We will try to get in as many as possible.

Hi Agillis,

First of all, congratulations! I've been using Vortexbox as a music backend server with XBMC as frontend and it works great! Installed Vortexbox in and old hp e-pc (Pentium III) and everything goes fine connecting via the squeeze box web gui.

Just a couple of things regarding to XBMC:

1) Using UPNP I've not been able to add the music in the "my music" menu of XBMC, I thing it's something regarding to the protocol because all the mp3 files and directories are read with strange names like "1978788.mp3", and the XBMC isn't recognising it at all in library mode.

2) Using daap I've gone a little bit further, the info of albums and mp3 are recognized, but I can't play them from the music menu when I'm on library mode. It's kind of strange, because album, cover and details are correct, but when I go into any album it recognizes the files as new directories (or at least they are shown that way, with again the cover of the album for each file).

And what it's the most strange, if i try to play the songs in normal mode (not library) everything goes very well for both UPNP and daap modes!

Am i doing something wrong? I'm using the most updated stable sources, from both vortexbox and XBMC.

Best regards and thanks in advance.

The daap part works well with iTunes but that's about it. That's all its really for. The uPNP part is using ushare and it's not the greatest. Use a SMB share and it should work fine.

feature suggestion:

blue-ray/hd-dvd ripping support, straight to iso/folder rips and/or to standarized mkv's.

question:

does this support integrating media on other NAS's/server shares with local media (making them appear as one) ?

VortexBox already does that unfortunately most DVDs are heavily copy protected so it can only rip about 60% of the DVDs out there. I call it an "experimental" feature.

No, VortexBox is designed to be the center of everything. Move all your data to it and then you have a central point to access all your media with players like XBMC.

Certainly out of the box it doesn't but doesn't take much to do. I have an instance of vortex box running on an 3 or 4gb virtual machine (think install is about 1.5gb from memory).

From there i mount my flac collection by nfs that is on a few other nas's i have, and it shares it out.

For my ripping front end i do something similar, i boot into vortexbox (on a 5gb partition) and it again mounts the destination by nfs and dumps the ripped music there.

I have been working on the dvd side of things too - hopefully i should have a releasable product in the next few weeks if i get time to do a little bit of fixing.

Sorry personal & work life has taken over the past month or so and I haven't had a chance to work on this.

My work commitments should reduce again in the next few weeks and i plan of finish this project then. If not i will tidy up the code and donate it to vortexbox for them to complete.

No worries. Just curious as to what the status was Big Grin

Glad to hear your still working on it

If possible, can you detail how you did this?

From my understand, Vortexbox only works with a single drive as a destination.

From what you say, it sounds like you can make it rip to a drive on a network.

And then xbmc or whatever will play it back from that network location? (does it do this directly, or does xbmc connect to vortexbox which connects to the nfs drive?)

Thanks in advance!!

It's been a while since I posted to this forum. I know a lot of XBMC users are already using VortexBox as their media server but we just release a new version today and I wanted pot here so new XBMC users that don't know about VortexBox can try it out.

VortexBox is an open source Linux distro based on Fedora. It is designed to server media to any player. VortexBox has a built in autoripper to rip CDs to it's hard drive. It supports SMB, iTunes protocol, SqueezeBox protocol, and now DLNA. So any media player you have should be able to access it.

The big new feature for this release is full DLNA support. You can now play media from your VortexBox on your DLNA TV, PS3, XBOX, etc.

So if you have an old PC your not using give it a try. Finally get all your media on one place!
