Audio over HDMI?
#1
Does XBMC support audio over HDMI? I have installed XBMC on a PC for the first time, but cannot get sound working. Must I custom install the driver specific to my motherboard? I've tried fiddeling around with digital/analog/etc to no avail. It's an EVGA motherboard with onboard HDMI. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

HDMI support must be provided by the driver. XBMC is capable of it if your hardware/driver is.
What type is your HDMI (graphics) device on the mainboard (ATI, nvidia,...)?

It's an EVGA NF77 motherboard with onboard audio (Nvidia 7150 onboard graphics). I suppose it's a matter of finding the audio driver from the EVGA website and building it into XBMC before running?

The instructions on that site are:
Quote:Short Alsa-Upgrade script install instructions:
1. download the script and save it somewhere
2. cd <your-download-dir>
3. tar xvf AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.17.tar
4. sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.17.sh

How can this be done via SSH (Winscp / Putty)?

EDIT: Those instructions are actually pretty self explanitory. I Winscp'd in, transfered the file, then type those commands in Putty, and it upgrades ALSA from 1.0.18rc3 to 1.0.20. From google, it looks like 1.0.18rc3 was from September 2008 and 1.0.20 is the latest version.

on Jaunty w/ fglrx upgrading alsa is not reqruied.
although i could only get HDMI audio on XBMC using the solution i posted here. suggest following the link i found

what does $aplay -l give you ? anything HDMI ( note the CARD# )
unmute with $alsamixer -c <card #>, hit M, hit ESC
redirect alsa default to HDMI

like i said, with Jaunty and fglrx, i recently got it working
are you using the "nVidia Restricted Drivers" (VPDAU?)

i think the wiki is lacking in the HDMI audio department
and id like to address this. how is this different for nVidia owners ?

(T: XBMCLive)xbmc@XBMCLive:~$ $aplay -l
Quote:(T: XBMCLive)xbmc@XBMCLive:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
(T: XBMCLive)xbmc@XBMCLive:~$

That's the output I get. I'm using the standard XBMC live boot CD at the moment. Is the digital card the HDMI one - ALC883?
Thanks for the help
