Linux tools for encoding videos for XBox XMBC
#1
Each of us have different preferences for encoding videos to playback through XBMC on our XBoxs', e.g. mkvmerge, VideoFab, Staxrip, Xvid4PSP, etc., etc. That's great. Problem - all these tools are for Windows !!!

Can anyone tell me if any of the above tools, or some other tool, that does an effective job on a Linux OS, e.g. Ubuntu? Even if quality may not be as good, is there a good tool that will convert videos between different formats on Linux?

Best Regards.

You can try this. It's a windows program, but claims to run on linux via Wine: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.ph...n&iId=8318 here's another: http://wiki.mediacoderhq.com/index.php/M...r_on_Linux

I didn't think about Wine at all! That opens up a lot of options. I'm going to get Virtual Box, put Ubuntu on it, then WINE on top and then try VideoFab and Xvid4PSP. These are the only two applications that worked for me. I must say however, I'm not terribly optimistic. I think both these software need Dot Net Framework. I'm not sure how good WINE is with Dot Net.

But thank's for the tip on WINE. It's something I never considered. So unless someone responds with a good tool for Linux, I'm going to pursue the WINE option.

P.S. Xvid4PSP will not install under WINE. Complains about some "Thinstall License".

Anything that is a frontend to mencoder will work well. Avidemux comes to mind but if butt ugly, Handbrake is by far the best for doing DVDs, not sure if it can convert from other formats though (never tried).

I'll give Handbrake a shot. Sounds like the best bet right now.

P.S. I did get a later version of Xvid4PSP that didn't have my original problem. Unfortunately, it needs Dot Net 3+. "Winetricks" let's me go as far as Dot Net 2.

VideoFab installed in Wine just fine, but still have to play with it.
I cannot get it to start. On windows For MKV output, VideoFab worked just fine for me, but Xvid4PSP gave better avi. So I really wanted both Xvid4PSP and VideoFab on Ubuntu.

Oh well, 1 out of 2 ain't so bad. And hopefully Handbrake works for me. The download I could find was for 8.10 though. Hopefully it has no issues with 9.04

P.P.S Handbrake crashing left and right on Ubunti :-(. Maybe it does have something to do with Ubuntu version.

Avidemux is great.
Some says it's linux's virtualdub(mod).

I use it to encode in H.264 (with x264).

Ubuntu 9.04 x64 on Intel Q6600.

Too bad the xbox is not powerfull enough to play H.264 high profile without dropping frames Sad

I use dvd::rip to rip DVD (enable universe, multiverse etc. and install libdvdcss).

0.9.3 works fine on Ubuntu 9.04 for me. Did you make sure you got the right bit-version, i.e. 32-bit or 64-bit

Okay, I'm running Ubuntu 9 on a Virtual Box under 64-bit vista. But Ubuntu itself is running 32-bit intel right?

Also are there instructions available somewhere that'll tell me how to configure Handbrake to create files that'll play on XBox nicely? The GUI is too complicated for me.

Confused...
