I've followed this guide to install karmic mini and xbmc on a Revo.
It works fine except auto login. All the pointers I've found on these boards doesn't seem to apply to karmic, at least I can't figure it out.

Maybe some of you ninjas can help us mere mortals?

hi folks am i right in thinking that if i wanted to be able to use XBMC and say for eg linux ubuntu, i would need to duall boot using usb drive, being that i wouldnt be able to to both as a like in a dsk top.

am really confused about this, what would the easiest way to work this, as would like to be able to use xbmc and as normal everyday pc for web surfing . etc

ok i followed wiseguys installation mijxed with other how ever i still fail. when i tyr to start xbmc i get error:unable to open display
FEH.py cannt connect to x server. What the hell do i do!?!?!?!? i googled and no help

My method no longer works with Alpha2 and up. It doesn't pull in xorg and some other things like it used to.

I followed the instructions and ppa's on this site to get Beta 2 working flawlessly on a ubuntu 9.10 karmic minimal (I prefer this to XBMC-Live):

If you want to dual-boot xbmc and ubuntu you don't need to have one on a usb drive, you can install 2 ubuntu installations to the Revo's HD, one XBMC and one normal ubuntu. Thats how I do it. Just follow the link's

instructions and install xbmc. Then install ubuntu, not the minimal but the full desktop version. The ubuntu installation will pick up and resize the XBMC partition and then automatically add it to grub.

I had the same problem you had - what is the SVN's so I can try that.

Same problem here...tracked the problem to NOT selecting the multiverse repository during the Ubuntu install. Add the multiverse and update and all is good.

Just a suggestion to help out other linux noobs like me: perhaps a few lines at the beginning of this post as to which options to choose during the install of ubuntu. there are only a few places where you can mess up and it would be great to have some guidance without surfing all over the web.

This tutorial is the best I have found so far, I have just installed it on my revo R3610 and it is booting very quickly, with splash screen (apart from the initial acer logo you couldn't tell it was being run on a PC/revo)

However if you look at the comments for the tutorial I linked to, alot of people are having problems with the usplash and xbmc stages. This is an easy fix, which the author has not implemented so make sure you do the following:

At the stage where you are adding sources to the /etc/apt/sources.list, you need to change the PPAs for xbmc to:

note the removal of the "karmic-" prefix so that it is now just "ppa" rather than "karmic-ppa" in both urls.

This is just FYI, to anyone who might experience the same problem as me. Also it is not directly related to XBMC, but it is related to Revo and HDMI sound routing.

I have a setup of a Linux Revo, hooked up via HDMI to an LCD TV, a Thomson 46", 46E91NF32. The TV has a coaxial audio output. I use this output to route digital audio to my non-HDMI surround sound decoder (a plain old Creative DDTS-100), which supports both Dolby Digital and DTS.

I had the following problem: Passthrough audio worked only for Dolby Digital AC3 files, NOT FOR DTS! This had me baffling for weeks until just a few moments earlier where I found the solution / workaround.

It appears that the TV (or my decoder) has a "bug", when switching from something else to DTS, the DTS signal is not detected. The workaround is to switch input on the TV to a different one, and then back to the Revo HDMI input, and voila, DTS sound can be heard.

I'm not sure which device is to blame here, but, hopefully this will help other people with similar hardware like mine.

Other TV codes of Thomson which might have the same problem (for search feature): 37E90NF32, 40E90NH22, 40E91NF32, 40E93NF32, 42E90NF32, 46E90NF32, 46E91NF32, 46E93NF32.

I chose this method because I wanted the capabilities of a full browser. So I use the "Launcher" plugin/program to launch Firefox.

I curious to hear the differences between the XBMC Live and a full blown Linux OS.
