How does XBMC handles resolutions. Looking at my xorg.conf there are non listed but numerous ones available in the settings menu?

I want to set it up that only 480, 720p, 1080i and 1080p are showing and ideally 100% compatible with TV's.

They're handled by xrandr as in every recent linux distro. You should have a look at "modelines" if you want to craft your own (this has nothing to do with xbmc, so you're better of at the ubuntu forums or a simple google).
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.

Cheers the direction. I messed about with modelines ages ago. Xrandr is new to me. Will look it up.

Xrandr relies heavily on what your display reports (EDID information). Unforunately a lot of EDID resolutions and refresh rates coming from TVs are totally crap. Writing your own - or falling back to modelines - would be your best option.

As a reference you could have a look at mine: http://sprunge.us/iYcF

yeah I recall playing with mythtv about 4 years ago and getting frustrated with modelines working with the plasma properly.

Thanks for that example, really appreciate it. Has all the 1080p ones I want and just need to sort out the 720p and 480p should they be required. I have a 1080p plasma and then a HD ready plasma and LCD to test with.
