So there is no way to use the <key id=YYYYY> syntax in the keymap files?

Compiling a new Kernel seems like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

if you are already on the .29+ kernel you could just recompile the module (assuming that your current kernel hasn't got the module compiled into it.)

If you follow the link I posted you should be able to determine how teh system sees those key presses and therefor what keycode to use in your xml file.

I would look but I just haven't had time recently.

Maybe of interest

How do I only compile that module and have it compatible with my running kernel?

I can compile the whole kernel, there are plenty of instructions to do that on the web, but then it has problems with the nvidia driver which means that this isn't really an option. I've not found any instructions for compiling a single kernel module.

PS I got the kernel packages from 2.26.29 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Download the kernel src.

extract it.

cd to drivers/HID just run make

or

after running ./configure
make modules

After a large amount of kernel problems involving the nvidia drivers failing to run glx I decided to abandon the kernel method.

I tried the other method you have suggested in another thread, using the cyberlinkusb program. It works, which is a bit bizarre as it didn't work the last time I tried it.

Thanks for your help.
