[AppleTV] Broadcom Crystal HD Hardware Decoder Mini-PCIe Card support for Apple TV?
#31
haha - so maybe apple had some foresight and included some additional silicon in an effort to future-proof the device - very cool.

How to interpret Davilla words? Is he trying to confuse us? Is the name just a coincidence?

My guess is that Davilla is working on a solution where we would need to replace the PCI-e wireless card in the ATV with one of these....

If I'm right it looks like it'll only be a $30 upgrade...

That sounds like the winning guess to me...

Wow! What a cool "hacky" way to use this new technology. Who needs wireless anyway? Use the Ethernet!

I wonder how long we have to wait until Apple releases a firmware update that disables 3rd party mini PCI-E cards, like IBM did with the mPCI cards in their notebooks years ago.

Somehow I don't think so....

Check line 161 and 162.

As if we all didn't already know. The tags at the bottom with the part numbers have been there for how long now?Laugh I can't wait for this development though.Nod

I still don't understand how this could fit in with AppleTV. Does the maiboard have a mini-PCI slot?

Yes it does, used for Wi-Fi.

And if you check here: http://www.mail-archive.com/atv-bootload...00357.html last paragraph... I think we know what there is to know.

Now, it only remains to see how to source a Broadcom mini pci card.

http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=bcm9700...86.c0.m359 Holy hell! Shocked $25?!?

A used Apple TV looks like a really good buy now... is it something that could be used on a MacMini as well? Is it gonna be used through VDPAU?

VDPAU does not support the nvidia 7300 GPU. That should answer the second question. For the first, what does the non-nvidia chipset MacMini have in common with the AppleTV? Next to DRAM, it's the only "slot" in there.
