9400 or 8400 pci card for vdpau?
#1
I want to upgrade my 5 year old amd system for vdpau. I'd rather not go through the time and hassle of a rebuild, and since I don't have pci-x only agp and pci, I am debating between a 8400 or 9400 pci card.

or

So 2 questions:
1) Is the 9400 better than the 8400 for vdpau?
2) Is the 1gig of ram on the 9400 versus 512mb on the 8400 worth the extra $25?
Thanks!

Yes, 9400 is faster and yes 1024mb is much better..

Although the 8400 is enough for playing 1080p, but think the 9400 will use less resources for the same job, which will keep it cooler and perhaps extend the lifespan of it aswell.

It honestly makes zero difference. The decode HW is the same in both, clock is really moot, so long as you have more than 350MB or so VRAM you'll be fine for all 1080p. I'd spend the $25 on an IR receiver, or better yet, BEER!
