Sound drop out on 9.04.1 with Revo
#1
I have an Acer Revo, and I followed the standard build instructions to get XBMC on a Jaunty Ubuntu lite install.

Things run fine, except that every couple of minutes on video the sound drops out for a second, and then comes back again. It has happened with both the stable release and the latest SVN builds (I've uninstalled xbmc and reinstalled a few different versions to try and fix this). Happens with different sound formats and different codecs on all video files.

It happens with playback of mp3s as well, so not just video playback.

Anyone else experienced this problem?

And my bad for not initially including the debug log; here's a hopefully useful snippet:

Please read stickies on how to post in a useful manner. Specifically, DEBUG log.

Thanks,

My bad; a snippet of the log file is now included in the original post ...

Please read stickies again. We need FULL debug log to a site like pastebin. Not just a snippet.

I've noticed something similar. Can't say I've investigated much. I get a short pause during most media file playback. It hasn't bothered me much, but if someone else is having a similar problem, thought I'd chip in.

FYI, there were some issues in 9.04.1 of XBMC. May be worthwhile to try SVN PPA.

So noted: here's a pastbin copy of the latest log:

http://pastebin.com/d66a98e61

Other info:

Jaunty i386 install
XBMC 9.04.1 installed from the stable ppa for Jaunty via apt-get
A revo Acer box

XMBC installed following this thread
http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=53812

Stock alsa, followed the instructions to the letter

Attempted the following (about 5 minutes ago):

Created advancedsettings.xml

<advancedsettings>
<audio>
<resample>48000</resample>
</audio>
</advancedsettings>

Has not helped the issue unfortunately.

Like I said, please use the latest SVN PPA instead of the stable one. There has been numerous fixes since then.

You are also having DB issues. You may want to clear your .xbmc/UserData directory and start over.

Anyhow, I really suggest upgrading XBMC.

Nevertheless, looks like possible ALSA issues so you may want to try upgrading that too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the latest svn build from the PPAs (the latest as of this afternoon), before switching back to the stable PPA, but unfortunately I still had the same issue. I'm on the latest Ubuntu alsa versions; the box is updated to all the latest packages

Which ALSA version is that?

I think alsamixer -h will tell you.

FYI, I had some odd issues myself with Jaunty and solved it by manually upgrading the KERNEL to 2.6.30 version. My issue seemed different in that I had sound cutouts EXACTLY at the 30 second mark.

My current kernel version is : Linux htpc 2.6.30-02063004-generic #02063004 SMP.

I basically installed the Karmik kernel to fix my sound issues. But, I am not sure you have the same issue so try at your own risk.

Another thing to try is changing your device to plug:hdmi.

Anyhow, I think there are a few other threads in these forums on how to properly get sound working with the ION. You may want to search for those.

It's alsa v1.0.18. My kernel is 2.6.28-13-generic.

I upgraded back to the latest svn ppa version, blew away my .xbmc. No love; I then changed my audio hardware and passthrough to 'plug:hdmi'. Didn't help either I'm afraid.

So I might try the latest kernel for Jaunty 2.6.28.15, and see if that helps.

No, the latest kernel for Jaunty did not help me. I HAD to use the Karmik one.

Also, that is not the latest Alsa. You would need to manually install the newer ALSA too.

Please search the forums for guides on this.

FYI, the ALSA version is 1.0.20 I think.

There we have it.. But what I was trying to say is that folks had to upgrade to 1.0.20 (at the very least) to get the sound working properly.

Thanks for pointing out it's not at .21.

Oh yeah, I see. I misread that, for some reason I read "latest version." I would agree upgrade to 1.0.20, it fixed my sound issues as well.

I used the ubuntu alsa upgrade script (at this point it's still as 1.0.20): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810

I believe this upgraded my kernel as well since I haven't been able to update my kernel packages through aptitude since then.
