Harmony 520 Universal. Which remote to clone?
#1
Which remote control did you choose to clone with the Harmoney 520? I tried the Microsoft MCE remote and that did not work.

The weird thing even the original xbox remote does not work. But the remote that came with the IR sensor does.

I only want to use the IR USB dongle. Not the remote. I want to use my harmony for this.

Thanks.

Hmm I think I found the problem. I believe the remote is not actually a remote.. but a keyboard/mouse keystroke sender.

That sucks. :-(

I have that very remote, and setting it up as a keyboard is a snap, and works really well. Tell the remote that it is an MCE Keyboard. You have to type it in, its not in the drop down menu. Then you can go through and map the remote button to the keyboard keys. This is a link that I used to set mine up.

Let us know if it worked.

are you sure we have the same one? I tried the instructions. Used Microsoft --> MCE Keyboard and there is no response whatsover from the xbmc to any button.

I have a different receiver but the same remote, if is being detected as a keyboard it should be rather universal. Have you tried logging in via putty and irw command?

If Linux detects this one as Keyboard/Mouse than Lirc have nothing to do with it.
Just tail -f /var/log/messages and unplug and plug the remote and see how it is recognized.. If it is a usb keyboard.. fine great.. just open a console, see what keys it sends and map them in xbmc..
I am interested in buying one of those, so please share this experience with me.. when you say type it in and not in drop-down menu, exactly what do you mean

It is the receiver that is critical for how it is recognized not the remote.

Normally when you setup the harmony remotes there is a drop down menu with all the different types of remotes it can emulate. However when setting your harmony as a keyboard you have to type it in, its like a hidden feature.
