Linux with xBMC?
#1
Hi,
I'd just like to know if anyone thinks I would be able to run Ubuntu Linux with xBMC on the following configuration. I know it won't be able to do real HD but most of my videos or small xvid or divx movies...

Compaq Deskpro EN
Pentium III 733Mhz
512MB RAM
ATI RAGE PRO TURBO AGP 2X Graphics Controller card with 8-MB SDRAM

Thanks.

That GFX card I suspect will be your limiting factor, mainly because I don't think it supports the later openGL specs and has only 8MB of ram.
Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
Gigabyte MA78GM-U2SH Mainboard
ATI HD3200 Onboard
AMD 7750BE Dual-Core 4.00GB RAM
ATI HD3200 HDMI Sound
HTPC HMDI -> ONKYO TX-SR605 -> Panasonic TH-46PZ85U Plasma

OK but what is I popped a NVIDIA Geforce 8 service graphics card? I think I read somewhere that the new xBMC Linux build uses the GPU instead of CPU in 8 series+ cards? Would this take the load off my CPU and allow me to stream at least 720p?

You need a CPU that supports SSE2, which the P3 doesn't.

How would this Netbook run XBMC?

It seems to have an Intel 950 with 64mb ram. + I would have the added benefit of having a portable netbook for vacations and such.
