jerky video playback w/ vdpau & 1080p
#1
I am evaluating XBMC and comparing to minimyth for my HD video playback needs. I have an ASUS motherboard w/ NV 8200 chipset.

When I play an ( any ) m2ts move at 1080p I get motion with minute jerks. Enough to ruin the experience. I can boot the same machine into minimyth and play the same file with mplayer ( vdpau also ) and I get smooth playback, so I know the network and hardware isn't the issue. Looking at the CPU while playing back in XBMC I see both CPUs are hardly being used, as I would expect, so the VDPAU is working fine.

When tuning mplayer on minimyth I had to turn up the buffering some, possibly I need to do that, but I cannot see any such setting in XBMC. Any ideas for making this work? I am not running SVN version, I am kinda afraid to try it after my last experience, but I will if there is some indication this will fix things. Please post and let me know what to try, what logs to post, etc.

Thanks people, the XBMC interface ROCKS, and I would love to have it play nice...

Just like the other guy in the thread just below yours, you should go to the video settings menu and enable "sync playback to display." You should also look at the OSD and see if you are dropping any frames.

Darwin, thanks for your help, unfortunately I don't seem to have the "sync playback to display." anywhere. Where is this setting, I cannot find it. Also what is the magic to showing the OSD, I turned on the debug log, and it shows the CPU, but not dropped frames... Take pity on me I am new at this.

Looking at the log inside .xbmc/temp, I get a lot of this stuff:

It's not in 9.04, you will need a more recent version, at least r20338. Settings -> Video -> Player.

I don't know what those log messages are or if they are relevant. To show the onscreen display, hit the "o" key.

Thanks again, updating to the latest SVN using Dennis' excellent script, made my jitter problem go away. "Sync playback to display" does not seem to have any effect....
