Does the VDPAU/GPU accelerated video behave differently for different types of video files?

I've been having great success with high bitrate x264 encoded files and yet I'm getting terrible results on older xvid encoded avi's (lots of dropped frames and audio 1/2 to 2 seconds out of sync).

I'm going to pull together log files and better documentation on this but i wanted to check and confirm that the gpu acceleration wasn't only being used on x264 encodes.
