Hey there,
Sorry to bump this thread, but this seems like an appropreate context in which to ask this.
For some reason I've decided to have the SVN versions of the repositories added in my sources.list, and the latest upgrade caused my installation to occationally crash (maybe one in ten times), whenever I start playing something.
What is the correct way to downgrade?
As simple as:
1) apt-get remove xbmc
2) remove the svn-repos from sources.list
3) apt-get install xbmc
Setup is Ubuntu Hardy (minimal) on an ASRock ION 330
Or is there more to it than this? Should I remove ALL the packages that depends on xbmc, and in that case, can I get a list of those somewhere?
I know the last question is out of context, but I hope it's ok.

For what it's worth, your issue seems to be due to your /etc/nsswitch.conf.
Do you have "WINS" in there at all? If so, try removing it and see if things work with newer build.

Yes. I have WINS in the /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
I am just baffled at how you determined it was WINS. I am not at home, but will give it a try tonight and what changed in the SVN to break WINS?
Thanks.

There have been other known issues (reported for linux in general) relating to wins. Search for firefox wins crash and you will see.
Though, the crash is different than what you reported. At this point, it's just an educated guess that wins is causing your issue.
