just a wild guess, are you running xbmc as root?
in that case the .xbmc directory will be located here:
/root/.xbmc

I redid it again by ppa and still don't have. I can't figure it out.

Edit: I finally got it by running the automated script from this forum http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=55282
I don't know what the problem was but I have it now finally
