I have just installed xbmc on a debian amd64 machine from the debian multimedia repo.

I have gdm installed with auto logins into userid video. from .xsessionrc I start xbmc -n -fs.

I can sometimes play some videos and sometimes not. I initially though it was a sounds problem, I need all my sounds to go out the iec958.

but I don't think so after looking at the logs

For posterity, I have found the answer.

I was also starting x11vnc and it seems to have been causing some problem.

For anyone else having this issue, it's being tracked here:

On the bug report, Keyser Suze reports that removing x11vnc did not in fact resolve the issue. It appears that it is an issue with having VDPAU enabled when running over an X11 connection that doesn't support it.

The workaround is to go into Settings > Video > Playback and change the render method to GLSL.
