XBMCLive 9.11 Beta1 released
#1
New XBMC Live release: XBMC Live 9.11 Beta1

This new release introduces (among other things) a totally revamped installer. This release uses the default debian installer, allowing much more control on the destination system, including partitioning. The old installer is discontinued and Live USB disks will have to be created using unetbootin - or similar.
Pls note that once installed on hard disk, the default user used for running XBMC is the user that was created during the installation, hence credentials for remote access (ssh, sftp) are the ones specified during the installation. As per USB flash disks created with unetbootin, the "traditional" combination xbmc/xbmc applies.
A second new feature is the ability to execute custom scripts automatically during boot (as root). Hopefully this will allow an easier path to system customization of live systems. More on this in due time.

Before going on, check the Wiki FAQ on XBMC Live.

Other details about this release:

* Based on Ubuntu Karmic - uses grub legacy though... (time for grub2 will come)
* NVIDIA drivers: 190.42 (VDPAU included on supported GPUs)
* ATI/AMD drivers: Catalyst 9.11
* Intel drivers: default xorg
* Natively supports MCEUSB remotes
* Uses duduke's great "spinner black" usplash theme!
* Boot script automatically increasing the system audio volume
* Includes the magic tvheadend package, which brings live TV in XBMCLive. The PVR branch of XBMC is not yet ready, but read this thread to understand how to interact with tvh. The default credentials for the web interface are xbmc/xbmc.

The XBMC repositories sources are already configured and topfs2's cool script "Aptitude" is included, so updating XBMC to follow the new releases will hopefully be easy!
The plugin "SVN Repo Installer" is also included, thus installing new scripts/plugins/skins will be easier.

A quick TOC of what has been already asked; note that these posts are related to previous releases so instructions are not 100% accurate. I will revise them as soon as possible.

Final words are destined to all who supported and contributed for this release; this includes all XBMCLive users but most of all who was so patient and supportive during the development cycle, namely Daniel Baumann (Debian Live maintainer) and Cody A.W. Somerville (Canonical).

it does not, that post is related to previous releases, ie installation on HDD in "portable mode".

Ok, thanks ! Is there another similar method to upgrade my live-to-hdd install to the latest live version ? (That is, any method w/o loosing the data partition on the same HDD that XBMCLive is installed to).

Hi

After installation of latest xbmc-live (on HDD) /etc/apt/sources.list only contains one entry (cdrom:\\).

Could you please post all current sources necessary for future upgrading (that is, the xbmc sources and the correct ubuntu sources).

Thanks alot,

Michael

I think this it could be usefull:

I try to update from live a2 to b1 with the following command:
Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade
but when I restarted the system, it showed me only the prompt login.
So I search in the forum and found this solution: add "runXBMC" to the /etc/rc.local file
Restart again but after the splash screen it show me only an xbmc screen not centered in the monitor. I tought about a video driver problem then I add the ppa for the newest nvidia driver (this link) and install it.
Everything works now Smile

O.K. I took sources from the alpha2 live cd. I hope they are correct also for the beta1 release:

Code:
deb http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic-security main restricted universe multiverse

# Custom repositories
deb http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://www.lonelycoder.com/debian hts main
deb http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/ karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/ karmic main

Just booted the live ISO in Virtualbox: i see the installer now has a partioning tool. Am I correct that it is now possible to install to a specific partition and leave other partions intact and mount these partitions in XBMC once installed ?

I think it could be a bug: if I start my pc without any video connection (no hdmi or dvi) and then attach one my screen remains black

yes, be caution when selecting which partition to format and where to place the grub bootstrap.

Surprised no one has commented on the new standard skin Confluence. I've been so used to PM skin and I thought I'd just switch back to that skin, but after just a few minutes I got used to the Confluence skin and I think it looks fantastic.
