Multi-channel FLAC in MKV how-to?
#1
I've gotten very accustomed to accessing most of my DVD collection on-demand from NAS. Now that my blu-ray collection is starting to grow, I'd like to be able to do likewise. Near as I can tell, transcoding my BDs to h264 and multi-channel FLAC is my best bet.

Playing these files back is going to mean building a new HTPC; before I do that, though, I want to make sure I understand what it's going to take to create the MKVs but I can't seem to find a good guide for doing so, nor for what, specifically, I need to do in order to play them back in XBMC. Can anyone point me to the right info?

Thanks!

Hi

When transcoding its easier just to extract an AC3 file, they are only 400~500megs. XBMC handles them very well. To extract Bluray you will need something like Anydvd Hd. The best software I've found is either Handbrake or MeGui. Transcoding a Blueray can take many hours of processing.

Thanks for the response. I have AnyDVD HD and I'm not too worried about the time it takes to transcode (since this will be happening on a server) nor the space required for the HD audio files. I really /don't/ want the AC3 audio. On my system, the difference between AC3 and TrueHD is quite audible.

I have Handbrake but didn't know it could do this. I'll check their forum for further instructions.

Still hoping to find out what it takes to play back such files in XBMC.
