[MAC] Broadcom Crystal HD Mini-PCIe Card in a Intel (GMA) Mac Mini?
zscholz Wrote:With EyeTV files (from XBMCEyeTVParser) played through XBMC I get almost constant dropped frames (maybe 10/second) and the sync is completely off. I recently installed the Broadcom Crystal HD Card and have the 1.0.3 drivers installed.

I have Broadcom Crystal HD selected from System | Settings | Video | Playback, but am unsure on how to "prove" that it's in fact working (any suggestions - I verified that it was loaded in the Console Log "Device Opened"??).

At any rate, here's my setup:

Mac Mini 1.66 GHz
OSX 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard)
XBMC r28256
2GB RAM
Broadcom Crystal HD BCM970012 (1.0.3 drivers)

All of my media (1080i MAX - between 15-20Mbps MAX) is stored on a Firewire 400 external drive and read from there - though I've moved one of these files to the internal hard drive and no change...

If I need to get some log files for troubleshooting - let me know and I'll post/send them ASAP.

Any suggestions would be GREAT!! Smile Thanks in advance!!

Standard drill, xbmc.log, mediainfo on the files in question. use http://www.pastebin.com for posting these.

Thanks Davilla -

Pastebin file of the log is at http://pastebin.com/Drwsem0U

File info for playback are 2 types --

EyeTV files are: Mpeg-2 video (it's labeled 1920 x 1080, but since it was recorded over-the-air I know it's not more than 1080i) between 10 - 15 Mb/s, ac3 audio 5.1

In general - with these files I am getting CPU0: 0.0%, CPU1: 0.0%, CPU-XBMC: 30'ish% -- 12.5 FPS.

Movie Rips: DVD Rips - relatively low quality - These are not losing many frames (maybe 40 over the entire movie). These are Mpeg-4 h.264 encoded 420p -- .5 - 1.0 Mb/s, ac3 audio

In general - with these files I'm getting CPU0: 0.0%, CPU1: 0.0%, CPU-XBMC: 25'ish% -- 24 FPS.

Anything else you need?? Thanks a MILLION!!

XBMCEyetvParser is borked and can't find ffmpeg or ImageMagick.

Hey Davilla -

Thanks again for looking into this for me...

I understand from your previous post that the interlaced video is still a problem. I assume that the two "test" video files on the google code website where the CrystalHD drivers are located would work well, but they both drop frames on me like crazy as well - approx. 15 FPS dropped.

Does this make sense?

I've added a new xbmc.log file @ pastebin - this log is of the playback of the two test files http://pastebin.com/ypQrdvDF

Thanks also for the heads up on the ffmpeg and ImageMagik - I downloaded and installed both of those and pointed the XBMCParser script at the newly installed tools (even though I'm not exactly sure what they are used for - the script worked before I installed both of them).

Let me know if I SHOULD be seeing that many dropped frames from the test files - and I'll patiently await the fix for interlaced video - and THANKS!!

don't use those files to test with xbmc, they are there for testing under hellobmc, and driver/lib development.

Hey thanks again Davilla -

Obviously, no rush - I know you have better things to do, but I just wondered if/when the Broadcom HD stuff gets updated to fix the interlaced video, would the fix be in a driver update or in an XBMC update. I'll watch for the updates as they are available.

Thanks again and I'll standby waiting patiently...

Maybe lib, driver and/or XBMC. Interlaced is being stubborn.

Hey Davilla -

Is there a "readme" file or a set of instructions for building the Crystal HD drivers myself? I have the 1.0.3 drivers installed, but noticed that was based on r26 and being that you are at r61, I thought "can't hurt"...(even though I know it won't solve my interlacing problem)

I have the source downloaded, but I'm not sure what's next as far as compiling the drivers.

I have xcode and can get around terminal just fine...

If it's a huge hassle, then no big deal, but if there's a "quick" way to build the r61 version, I'd like to do it...

Thanks again!

r61 will be a world of hurt Smile I guess you are not reading the CrystalHD status sticky are you ? stick with the r26 (1.0.3 tag).

read http://code.google.com/p/crystalhd-for-osx/ , it details how to build. Can't miss it Smile

I'm interested in the recent power handling additions you added in r60? Did I read correctly that this will allow for sleep mode in OS X?

Are things still pretty shaky with the newest r65 (compared to r26) ? Or would it be reasonable?

If I want to get the newest release, is this the right way to grab it from svn?

svn checkout http://crystalhd-for-osx.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ crystalhd-for-osx-read-only

nothing from crystalhd-for-osx svn trunk is recommended right now, very unstable as bcm70015 support rolls in.

The power handling additions added in r60 are the driver side, xbmc side in it's svn trunk is prep'ed but not hooked. When told to sleep or is going to sleep, xbmc side needs to close up driver, then driver will be able to sleep.

Sorry for being slow, but does that mean I need to wait for a new official build of XBMC with the sleep stuff hooked in and then sleep mode (manual and automatic per OSX power settings) will work with CrystalHD kext loaded?

Yep, unless that is you want to add it in yourself.

You can extract diffs of the power additon from googlecode, apply to r26, rebuild.

Then implement CCrystalHD::Wake and CCrystalHD::Sleep, these need to open/close driver.

installed the Habey HB-VD904 in my 1.66 mac mini, using the instructions here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=481157&postcount=1
to install CrystalHD 3.6.0

the install seemed to work, and I can see the Crystal HD option in xmbc, but playback is still very choppy on an MKV from bluray.

is there something else in my config that I need to tweak? the mac mini is still on 10.5.8...time to go to snow leopard? (can't seem to find a good consensus on the forums here)

sorry if any of this is noob material, I've tried scouring the forums here, but haven't found anything conclusive that seems to isolate the issue.

thanks!

Looks like updating to Snow Leopard 10.6 made a HUGE improvement. Getting 24fps fairly consistently...with occasional hiccups.

Is there a recommended version of 10.6 to upgrade (or not) to? I've read scattered messages about 10.6.3 being fairly solid, but maybe a bit more issues with 10.6.4, 10.6.5, 10.6.6.

thanks!
