That's what we eventually want to do. The problem is that it can make the database code slower, or more cumbersome, as you effectively need a key/value pairing system (e.g. a large link table with all key/value pairings, or multiple link tables generated on the fly for each key type). It's definitely the way we're going for the video library. If anyone would want to work on it drop me a line and I'll be happy to provide pointers. IMO redesigning the database would be the first point of call - the tag side of it is then relatively straight-forward (you'd just switch to using fileitem properties).
