[LINUX] Problems with frame drops jumps (consume packet error)
#76
myrison Wrote:Neil - I'm not a master log reader, but it appears you are running at 60 hz with 24fps material. Am I reading that correctly? If so, that's always going to create slight problems with smooth video.

yes, for that log I was. but I was running ubuntu 9.10 minimal with the 23.97/59.94 fix and had the same issue.

I can see the difference between 2:3 pulldown and 24p displays, and this is definitely not 2:3 pulldown.

i'll do my best to get a log on 23.98Hz.

Ok, good enough. Just making sure you saw that as well to rule one thing out. With that said, several people in this post have had the problem on 24 hz, so that's unlikely to be the only problem.

Is it one jump about 5 seconds after starting playback? That's nothing to worry about.

no, it seem to be consistent jumps every (i would guess 0.8 seconds), i will time them later.

other times it plays smooth. it's odd.

i'm just about to try lucid. i'll report back.

thank you for your advice anyway.

I've just been playing around on lucid minimal. all i have installed is the bare minimum (for me) to run xbmc,

i installed ssh
installed nvidia 256 drivers
lbvpau
xbmc-live

and rebooted. i get the judder, and it is once per second. i timed for 11 jumps, and it was 11.87 seconds (accounting for .25 seconds to start and 0.25 seconds to stop it's near as damnit 1 per second).

I need to determine whats doing it, some kind of clock or process which is repeating something once per second. This may now be completely off topic.

Any ideas?

edit - i just checked my kernel log, and can't see anything there (nothing which is once per second).

lsof while playing a video - http://pastebin.com/6Mmaz7WP

related? - http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=63470

another edit. tried disabling everything i could in the bios. cd drive. ethernet. audio. it made no difference.

Here is the sample I used. Can anyone confirm the playback issues?

I have tested it on my xbmc-live and i got the same drop (even tough it doesn't count as a drop in the info thing) every 0.25-0.5 sec.

But it cant even play decent on my popcorn hour so something is wrong with the way the file is encoded. Can see it uses over 30MB/s which is pretty high

I ran the test as well and to me the video it looks like original encoding, so while it is high bitrate, if that is what the original was, seems like a good sample to use. When I watched it, it jumps around consistently as well, though CPU never exceeds ~12%, so I'm not sure if the bitrate is the issue.

Neil, did you change anything or just rip from BR? If the latter, then this looks to be a good example of a source video that causes these strange jumps in video. Hopefully one of the devs can review the file in more detail to see if something can be learned.

Here is a link to my logfile while watching the sample.

Dozens/100+ of these while playing the video:

straight from the bluray.

I converted the dts-hd to AAC. but it did it with the original .m2ts as well. I can get a sample in .m2ts, but I wont be able to upload it until next week (at work) as my home internet just died.

I made this thread as I haven't been able to find anyone else with the SPS errors - http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=74611

apologies if the second thread is unwarrented.

Well i also removed the sound track in the sample file and converted it to 25fps and back again to 23.976fps without any sound. Still had the same issue. So it isn't because of the sound.

I also tested on my Win7 rig (which is different hardware and a different display), but it outputs just fine. 100% smooth and plays with no entries to the log indicating any kind of error.

The separate thread seems like a good idea, I just added my info over there with the hopes that a dedicated and new thread will attract more attention. Given the fact we have pretty good debug logs and a description of the problem, a TRAC ticket may be appropriate here as well if we don't hear from one of the devs in the next few days.
