XBMC Live radeon HD 4200 Question
#1
Hello,
I am planning on building a server to install XBMC on and I have some concerns about performance regarding AMD cpu's and more importantly, the ATI radeon HD 4200 as this is what the motherboard below has built on. I am trying to keep the cost to around $400 give or take and I have listed the parts I would like to buy below. I have read in these forums that ATI and AMD can sometimes be inadequate to play H.264 and and Blu-ray Discs in XBMC. I would like to go ahead and just order all this with confidence so if anyone has any advice, or can tell me that this hardware will perform great or run like crap I would much appreciate it. Thanks A lot in advance!

FYI, I plan on using the HDMI port, so any word on whether or not the audio out in linux with the HDMI port would be great too... Also any suggestions on a good cheap RF remote what works well with XBMC Thanks again!

IMO

Dont waste your time with ATI. Nvidia will simplify your life and give you far better performance.

I am thinking that is what I will do, what about the AMD cpu performance? I think I may still get this motherboard and just get an nvidia video card with it......Thanks again!

Hi,

I was planning on building a similar system, how did your system go? Did it play 1080p bluray videos fine? Could you share your experience?

Hello all and sorry for the long delay here, I didn't realize my project may end up helping others figure out what it was they wanted to build. My end project ended up costing about 350$ which is dirt cheap for what it does. I installed Navi-x, transfered all my tv shows, movies and music and it's the best thing I have ever spent money on.

I ended up getting this motherboard which has the nvidia 8200 chip

with a 3ghz AMD cpu and after upgrading to ubuntu 10.04 from xbmcLIVE 9.11 (which included a needed driver update) it played 1080p videos without a hitch! Oh and just so you know, I got this remote which I highly recommend...http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...&CatId=358
