2015 Update Question:

I could never get this working.

Given that its 2015, what are my options for using one of the following for Keyboard on:
- Applet TV OS + XBMC
- CrystalBuntu XBMC

Devices:
- iPhone + Apps? (Which Apps) - via Wifi or via Bluetooth using iPhone as keyboard?
- USB Keyboard?
- Bluetooth or IR/ RF keyboards?

Its irritatingly slow to type out things using the Apple Remote for XBMC to add network locations & type out things using the Onscreen one click onscreen keyboard.

Is there a better faster way to have a proper keyboard that will work in AppleTV and on XBMC on AppleTV.

The iPhone based Apple Remote only shows AppleTV LIBRARY options. It does not to exact screen control.

Is it possible to plug in a USB or Bluetooth keyboard to work on Apple TV & XBMC?
and/or
Some iPhone App that can give me a virtual keyboard (on iPhone) screen to enter stuff into Apple TV & XBMC.

Please tell me of an easy way

There is XBMC Remote for iPhone/iPod.

For keyboard (and mouse) support on apple TV you need to install nito TV, then nitoTv -> Settings -> Install Sofware. This enables USB support for use of keyboard, mouse etc. under XBMC (not frontrow).

Assuming Nito is in addition to XBMC and wont mess with XBMC in any way...

Nito is a plug in that does not interfere with XBMC and installs for you USB support
you can also install USB support manually with a bit of terminal work
nito will also enable AFP and allow to mount AFP volumes that will then be visible in XBMC
once you have USB support you can try a Bluetooth dongle few have been reported working

Easy Option: (May be possible with a BT Keyboard and usb dongle....untested tho)

Install OpenElec with Frodo 12.3 on to the ATV1's HDD or on to a USB stick.

Then there is a Kodi Official remote App you can use via WiFi which has a Keyboard function included...

Hard Option:
Till the Successor to Crystalbuntu is released: (this will allow Kodi with a usb Keyboard)
