Fedora 12 x86_64 and VDPAU problem
#1
I have installed XBMC using yum and have the package xbmc-9.11-18.fc12.x86_64 installed. I have nvidia 7900GT and have installed the latest 195 drivers, which appear in KDE info center as being used by X. I also have libvdpau installed.

When I run xbmc I can playback video, but the CPU is heavily taxed and the first few seconds are choppy. The log shows this:
Code:
00:50:31 T:140045126203152 M:3066343424  NOTICE: Creating video codec with codec id: 28
00:50:31 T:140045126203152 M:3066343424  NOTICE: CDVDVideoCodecFFmpeg::Open() Creating VDPAU(1280x720)

Do I have to do something in X to get vdpau running? Since XBMC has the option to use vdpau, and it fails according to the log, that would seem to indicate the version of xbmc I have installed supports it. The libvdpau files I have on my system are all from the 195 drivers.

And I especially want to point out this:
Quote:Rules of thumb: anything from before the 8xxx series is unsupported*; anything with the original G80 GPU (8800 GTX, 8800 Ultra, Quadro FX5600, the first 8800 GTS) is unsupported*; everything newer in the 8xxx, 9xxx and 2xx series should work if the driver supports the card.

Thanks for the great info cowfodder. Previously I found some information that lead me to believe that they intended support for this chipset, but based on the links in that article it appears it never happened.

My plan is to pick up a 210 based card for cheap and go with that. I just wanted to see how the PC did and if I could figure out how to get the latest nvidia drivers installed on it and xbmc up and running before I bothered with the card. I guess I can go that route and probably have success.

I put in a GeForce 210 today and vdpau just worked without me needing to make any changes to my existing configuration.
