This solved my situation. I enabled the ati proprietary driver in Hardware drivers. I also installed te catalyst control software but i think enabling the driver is what sped things up. hope this helps.

Sadly, for my card the proprietary drivers are no longer supported and haven't worked since Gutsy Gnu.

I'll take this to mean that it's time to make the reluctant upgrade.

Although, it seems that everything works but the mouse pointer. Video still plays flawlessly, music, scripts ETC.
