Playing 1080p x264 content on a 8400GS?
#1
Hello,

I'm looking to buy a cheap card to play 1080p content until I can scrap up enough money to build an ION-based HTPC. I found a deal on eBay for a 8400GS 256MB card for $20. I'm not quite sure which chip it's using, though I suspect it's using the newer G98 since the description says it supports Dual-link DVI w/ 2560x1600 resolution -- looking around online, this sugests the newer G98 chip.

The G98 chip supports VDPAU feature set B.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this card, and if it'll play 1080 at acceptable framrates? I'm currently sporting a GeForce 6200 -- a decent card for it's time, but the poor thing chokes on the 1080p x264 sample I have.

Oh, I'm also running off a Pentium 4 CPU @ 3.00 GHz. I assume this is decent enough since the 8400GS supports VDPAU, so the CPU shouldn't be as taxed as it currently is (6200 doesn't support VDPAU).

So, will this card be enough to hold me over until I put together an ION?

Thanks for any replies!

I think 256MB Graphics RAM is ok but check.

I've got one system running a 2.4GHz Intel Celeron with a PCI 8400GS 512MB card and it handles 1080p content fine. Including the "killa sampla".
