[WINDOWS] HOW-TO use a Logitech Harmony Remote with XBMC

According to http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Contr...MCE_Remote that receiver is an eHome compatible, so it should work fine.

If JR says it should work then you're good to go. I vouch for JR expertise.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but "should" is the operative word! I've never tested the Philips remote myself. Until I win the National Lottery I can test only a small subset of the hundreds of remotes out there.

The safe option is to buy a Microsoft or HP receiver as I have tested those and I know they work.

Laugh well said, thanks for the clarification! I can add to the safe option the Philips receiver OVU4003/00 that I've listed in previous post (the other is the HP receiver). The OVU4003's were also sold under Dell brand. I do think the one in Johnny87au's link will work because it is RC6, though. But we need at least an owner to verify that personally to call it a safe choice.

Hi,
New here, I've given up with the whole world of Standalone supposed Media players and am now going down the nettop XBMC route.

I have a logitech Harmony One, but need an IR receiver.

will the following work for me (I don't need the remote but it's cheaper to buy this pack if it's compatible receiver)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/HDE-Wireless-Rem...435&sr=8-2

Thanks

No. That is a Chinavasion CVSB-983/Acowin AURC-001 remote: see http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Contr...MCE_remote

Actually it will work since the Harmony will emulate a Chinavision handset, but it's a particularly cheap and nasty remote that sends MCE keypresses, so for example you can't change the action of the green button, which will always open Windows Media Center.

Thanks for the info.
Right I'll pass on that one then. Iam a little confused as I only want the receiver. I though it just received IR and my Harmony decided what command to send. I guess there's more to it than that Nerd

This one is on the page you linked to will I be able to use the receiver from this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Windows-Control-...337&sr=1-1
Or an i better off waiting 'til I can find a MS or HP branded on on ebay?
Thanks.

Given you have the Harmony One. I'd say you should wait to get HP, MS, or Philips OEM RC6 receiver. I had this Chinavision for a while. It's very limited for what we need with XBMC, not worth using and spending time to find ways around it.

That remote is a VRC-1100, see http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Contr...s#VRC-1100, and it isn't much better than the Chinavision. Well, it's much better built, but just as inflexible.

Exactly the opposite is true!

The handset just sends a modulated infrared beam. The receiver, and the device driver it uses, have to receiver the infrared beam and convert it into some form of signal the operating system can understand. Simple receivers like the Chinavision and VRC-1100 usually just emulate a keyboard, so they respond to the IR signals they know about by generating one of the Windows Media Center shortcut keys.

More sophisticated receivers, like the MS and HP, can generate lots of signals e.g. WM_APPCOMMAND and WM_RAWINPUT messages, but more importantly they can be configured through the registry. Ironically we usually configure them to send keystrokes like the cheaper receivers, however the keystrokes they generate can be configured through the registry to work well with XBMC.

I would wait for an MS or HP receiver to come up on eBay. For example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170677506906

Ah Excellent thank you for the explanation. That makes sense now (and thanks for the link too!) Cool

For info I've just recieved a Dell branded one of these via Ebay.
The reciever (which is my concern for the Harmony) shows up in Device manager as a Microsoft Ehome Infrared transceiver. The remote functions well out of thebox except the back button doesn't do anything at the moment, but I'm sure thats a simple tweak for anyone wanting to use the actual remote.

I'm thinking about buying a Harmony One for my setup but I'm concerned by the lag. If I buy this IR receiver:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Media-Center-...2eb73cd8d1

Does that get rid of the lag? Does anyone have a lag-free setup with the Harmony One or am I best off getting another remote? Since I'll be using XBMC almost exclusively my priority is to get a remote that's snappy in XBMC.

The lag seems to be only with the Harmony One (mostly) and the 650. The Harmony 700 or older models like 360, 550, 890,... don't have lag (none reported that I came across). If you don't care about touch screen, then the 700 is pretty good choice. Same for the other older Harmony refurbished models; they are practically new (usually returned, not defect). This HP receiver is the right one. I'm pretty positive that the lag is with the remote, not the receiver.
