It looks like a newer version of the PVR ppa should be available soon, hopefully it is new enough, when it is available I'll try it out.

The above log wasn't made in the logical manner but I think it shows the video playback problems, I think the order I tried was this, set the max video quality to ask, tried a known 1080p video that works, tried the two videos that had failed at their maximum of 720p (they worked), set the max video quality to 1080p (there was an error here) and then tried the videos again.

Yup, seems you're getting a VP8 file on the last playback:
