How to enable VDPAU for nVidia 8400GS? Point me to a post?
#1
Question
I installed libvdpau and then I installed the nvidia vdpau software. I was following some steps from another post. When I run xbmc and hit 'O' I can see that the gcpu is still not doing any work, the two computer cpus are doing all the work. They run at roughly 30% on 720p content and it renders smooth. However, the cpus jump up to 50%+ on 1080p content and they can't keep the frame rate steady so of course the movie stutters.

So... the solution is to get VDPAU working and so far I haven't found the right instructions. Can someone point me to some clear steps?

Thanks a lot for your help! :-)

self-built? then you have to remember the -dev packages. (and reconfigure/remake). if not, we need a debug log - it should be all automagic.

You know what? This is totally in the wrong forum. XBMC is running perfectly fine. I need to get VDPAU on my 8400GS working in Ubuntu and I bet I did something wrong when installing the drivers. Maybe something out of sequence or wrong version. Something Huh

I'll post in Ubuntu forums.

Sorry Blush

you know what? i bet you forgot to install libvdpau1 but as you're gonna post in the ubuntu forums anyways, please at least give these guys some more information about what exactly you did.

I uninstalled the libvdpau drivers and the nvidia drivers and started fresh. So right now all I have installed is the "NVidia binary Xorg driver, kernal module and VDPAU library". Installed that from the Hardware Drivers screen. So far that's all I've installed.

So you're saying -in addition to this- now install libvdpau1?

Thanks! Smile

I'm pretty sure the xbmc debug log will tell what's wrong.

Yep! That helped a ton!

Now the 2 cpus run at 1 - 9% max. Barely even idling. 1080p MKVs are about 95% smooth in each of my test vids. They still have minor stutters in spots but I'm guessing that can be ironed out with tweaks to the settings.

Is there a thread that says what the best NVidia driver settings and the XBMC "Video > Playback" and "System > Video Output" settings should be for VDPAU? Mine must have some minor issues.

Thanks for helping with this! Big Grin

Yes, yes, yes you're extraordinarily brilliant and benevolent for taking 60 seconds to help someone as ignorant as me. Thank you SO much!
