Slightly glitchy playback
#1
I've been snooping around this forum for info on this, but not with any success. However, I'm sure this has been brought up before, so I'll apologize in advance for potentially wasting time.

I've just set up an Apple TV (first gen) with the Broadcom CrystalHD (BCM970015), installing all the software through ATV Flash (yeah, I spent the money to not have to fiddle around with the install).

I'm finding slight playback glitches in almost everything I play. The picture just freezes for a split-second and then kicks back in. It does it just enough to be annoying. I'd noticed this during playback before installing the CrystalHD card, but had assumed this would be resolved with the hardware decoder on board.

I'm streaming everything from a Synology Diskstation NAS, but I don't think it's got anything to do with that - I have an original xbox elsewhere in the house and everything plays back rock solid on that.

Any advice would be great.
Cheers.

My specs are:
Apple TV (white)
Apple TV OS 10.4.7
Apple TV software 3.0.2
Resolution 1080i
ATV Flash v4.2
Launcher 3.2.5
XBMC 10.0-beta2 r33778 (Sept 14)
Broadcom CrystalHD BCM970015 (rc.local)
Playing back a range of .avi files in SD

Right. I'll sit tight for now. Thanks.

I've downloaded the latest nightly build, which seems to be beta3.

Still seeing the same picture glitches. It freezes for a split-second and then catches up with the audio again.

I'll post a log and more details when I can.

Turn off whatever is using the httpapi.

Oh... but I'm using that to remote control it with the xbmc remote app.
Sad
I'll give it a go tomorrow.

I guess this means I need to buy another Harmony remote?

HTTP API and playback glitches are related?
I have the same issue with beta3 on ATV + Crystal HD (with Gentoo install)

It might be, something is checking the volume status every 3 seconds.

but in Dharma Beta 3 there is no option about HTTP API?

Hmmm. The glitches still happen when the iPod Touch I'm running the remote control app on is asleep.
Seems odd that it would be checking the volume status while asleep.
Must be something other than the iPod that is checking the volume status.
I'll run some media with the http api turned off tomorrow and let you know my findings.
Cheers.

Something is using the http api, like a webbrowser or some app to control XBMC.

Okay, I've turned off the http api in xbmc. I've been playing some video files, but the issue remains the same.
Any new suggestions?
I've included a new log file, in case that helps.

Hmmm... I'm not running anything else, as far as I know. Can I turn off "allow programs on this system to control xbmc"?
I've already turned off the "allow control via http" and "announce these services to other systems".

Cheers.

Okay, I turned the http api back on, figuring that I may as well use the iPod xbmc remote app, seeing as the issue was still there when I turned the http api off.
I'm pretty sure the problem is worse when the http api is back on.

Now, I think I should probably confirm that the http api is the network setting that allows remote control of xbmc over the network port?
Is there anything else that I should be turning off?
I've looked through the options on the ATV Flash interface and can't see anything that might be using it, but I've only had an Apple TV for a few weeks, so I could be missing something obvious.

I'm a little perturbed by this playback issue. I'd figured an Apple TV with the CrystalHD card installed would be a more powerful system than the original xboxes I use in the rest of the house, but I'm using the xbmc remote app to control them and their playback is rock solid.

Where am I going wrong?
