[LIVE] replace fluxbox with gnome
#1
I have Dharma beta 4 installed from a live cd on to my harddrive.
It's all working fine and dandy, however i would like to replace fluxbox with gnome as the optional desktop environment.

Machine should still boot directly into XBMC as it does now, however when logging out from XBMC, running 'startx' should load gnome rather then fluxbox.
  • Has anyone tried this?
  • Anything i should be aware of / avoid?
  • How do i remove fluxbox, just a simple 'apt-get purge fluxbox' or do i need to do additional steps?
  • How do i make 'startx' start gnome (after i have it installed)

I run a GUI on my xbmlive installation. Normally I run it as backgrouns session using nx server, but I can also start it from terminal.

It is quite simple. The only problem is that it does not work in 9.11. Anything gnome will break usb mounting. For the moment I use lxde and I have to be very careful not installing anything that includes gnome components. In dharma it works fine (at least in b3)

You dont have to remove fluxbox. Installing gnome will put that first in the list. By that I mean that startx will start the latest vm installed.
Don't install any display manager, it will remove the live component of xbmc.

Just do:
sudo apt-get install gnome-core
Then:
startx
